Book Description

6 and up1 and upAll Aboard Reading
All Aboard Reading!

On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people came to the nation's capital. They came by plane, by bus, by car--even on roller-skates--to speak out against segregation and to demand equal rights for everyone. They also came to hear the words of a very special leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. Told with a wonderful immediacy, this book captures the spirit of this landmark day in American history and brings Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech to vivid life for young children.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-3-This series entry covers the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom of August 28, 1963, and includes a brief historical perspective on the segregation and discrimination that preceded this event. One high point is the excellent and easy-to-understand description in words and pictures of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Ruffin's clear, readable text is a fine example of how short, simple sentences can be used effectively to tell a complex story. A good model for nonfiction picture books, this title uses numerous informative illustrations to supplement a spare but factual text. The illustrations are a combination of vintage black-and-white photographs and expressive full-color paintings. A must-purchase for both school and public libraries.-Eunice Weech, M. L. 5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, June 8, 2007

This review is from: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington (All Aboard Reading) (Paperback)
I am a second grade teacher. I use this book every year. I use it around his birthday, during Black History Month, and during our Language Arts unit on Courage. I love the part, and photograph, about the man that rollerskated from Chicago to see Dr. King. I think it protrays how important Dr. King was to people around the nation. This year I did somthing special. I work in Juvenile Hall with 15-16 year old males. Before I showed them the video of the speech, I had reveiwed some books about him, but I read this one aloud to them. It is a simple book that has a powerful message. The combination of drawings and photographs bring together this message.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Look and Feel to the book, January 24, 2006
I recently stumbled onto this book at a public library and I have to say I'm very impressed. Martin Luther King and the March on Washington is an excellent work that moves at a good pace for readers of any age. Going to the March on Washington to see King speak must have been a life-changing event that would positively impact anyone who attended. However, for those of us who were not there, or are too young to have been able to go, we are fortunate enough to feel like we are able to experience the magnitude of the event through the books pacing and sense of history. The author places us right in the moment and you can't help but feel like you are on the steps of the mall in Washington, surrounded by scores of people watching a critical moment in American history.
