4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Surprises...
Just got this...the two previously unreleased tracks on this cd are quite nice. i'm surprised that there's material of this quality left unreleased. "blue window" is an extended original blues with nice organ and horns, both of which were rare in Hendrix recordings. it's a long jam that vacillates between sounding impromptu and surprisingly well...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but not great
In short, if you really want to hear Hendrix play the blues then get the Jimi Hendrix Blues CD. I bought this just for the unreleased material and I was pleasantly surprised. Georgia Blues with Lonnie Youngblood is amazing and shows how well Jimi could fit in with a very traditional blues setting and still be Jimi. It was fascinating to hear his note selections...

Just got this...the two previously unreleased tracks on this cd are quite nice. i'm surprised that there's material of this quality left unreleased. "blue window" is an extended original blues with nice organ and horns, both of which were rare in Hendrix recordings. it's a long jam that vacillates between sounding impromptu and surprisingly well arranged...clearly everyone was listening very closely to each other and/or it's the final take of many attempts at this song. "Georgia Blues" features very fine traditional blues guitar by Hendrix and a strong vocal by Lonnie Youngblood...surprisingly it stems from 1969 and not from his years of session work prior to starting to sing lead himself.
overall this is a serious, deep, long and slow blues album with an informal feel...6 of the 10 tracks are seven minutes or longer, some of them well over ten minutes long. sound quality is excellent, although slightly rough on "blue window"...
highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have the Box Set, September 26, 2006

If you don't have the Box Set I would get this if only for 'Country Blues'. I thought the family had released all of the important recordings by the Master, but this is one someone denied us we now can study. I am very happy to hear these new versions of his standards. 'Georgia Blues' is a great workout with Lonnie Youngblood I didn't know existed. I could go on but seriously if you are a Hendrix fan, get this CD & be refreshed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Blues, February 24, 2005
This review is from: Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
Well I don't know if all Jimi Hendrix fans will appreciate this album, as its his blues stuff, but their is no denying Hendrix's blues talent and feel for that genre of music. After all, 1 third of Hendrix's music is blues oriented. He adored blues himself and had a great feel for it. The main highlight of his blues is that he so brilliantly incorporates remarkable guitar solos within his blues music. Also, this album doesn't carry the same songs as his other Blues album.

Best Songs:

Red House: His greatest blues hit. It has an extraordinary blues feel to it with a wonderful chorus. An all time classic in the field of blues.

Come on(Let the Good Times Roll): A classic cover from Hendrix, originally written by Earl King. Wonderful song.

Hear My Train a Comin': Quite possibly his second biggest blues hit, this epic song has several different versions to including an acoustic version. In this case, we get the classic original. One of my all time favourites in the Hendrix catalog.

Voodoo Chile: A superb 15 minute track, featuring god like guitar playing from Hendrix.

Midnight Lightning: Just Jimi and his guitar. What more could you ask for?

Overall, this album is very consistent featuring strong blues tracks throughout. It's quite obvious that Hendrix himself had a wonderful sense of blues, and I personally believe it was his blues music that meant the most to him. A fabulous album to own for any blues collector and I would think that most Jimi Hendrix fans would like it to. I am a huge fan of Jimi's popular metal music and I love this. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars If Purple Haze and Fire are all the Hendrix you know, then...., March 15, 2007
This review is from: Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
If Purple Haze and Fire are all the Hendrix you know, then...give this album a listen. There is a nice variety of tracks- from hard rockin' blues to mellow instrumentals. The variation of Voodoo Chile is worth the whole disc. I was pleasantly suprised with this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet another compilation, September 21, 2003
This review is from: Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
Experience Hendrix could have at least found some alternative takes or more un-released tracks to put on this CD.
We still have not got "Things I used to do" or "I got 5 Dollars in my pocket" two great Hendrix blues tracks known to be in the archives at Experience Hendrix.

The 2 tracks that are un-released however are are of some intrest and therefore if you are a fan then this CD is a must.

Let's see what is to come.....

This is an incredible compilation of some of Jimi's best blues recordings. Most collections of his focus on his rock history, but this is a unique blend. I love listening to it in the car, when I'm working in the house, or even when I have people over as background music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but not great, May 29, 2009
This review is from: Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
It was fascinating to hear his note selections over the standard stormy monday progression this song is in. Lonnie performance alone is enough to make this track very enjoyable. I have problems with some of the other tracks. For instance, the studio version of Red House, everyone has heard. It contributed nothing to this compilation. THere are some live treatments of Red House that show Jimi as a genius and true master of the blues and jazz. Jimi once said "for what I have heard most jazz players are just playing blues". Jimi's rendition of Red House from San Diego 69 would have really proved something. I love Let the Good Times Roll but it also adds nothing to this disc since its on Electric Ladyland. Several other tracks are outtakes from the boxset. Nothing new there and not really blues standard by any means. Now, I did really like the inclusion of the studio version of Hear My Train A Comin'. Jimi did that in the studio many times and never quite captures what he could do with the song live. This version would have been a worthy candidate of release on his final studio album and its about time it saw the light of day (in this excellent sounding mix/mastered form). Finally, the running order is just sorta cobbled together. But I admit despite all that could have been better, I did enjoy listening to this CD a few times then it got old fast. Again, for a true Hendrix pure blues extravaganza with more material and longer play time check out Jimi Hendrix Blues. Otherwise, if your a hardcore fan, you gotta have this and its worth it. I guess my main point here is that this CD does not really enlighten the naive listener to what Hendrix really could do within the blues medium any more that Electric Ladyland does. Nope, not by a long shot. Get Hendrix Blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimi, more than a rock star., March 26, 2005
This review is from: Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
We all know Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist to ever live. Well, most of us know that, at least. But now we get a look at him off stage playing the blues. This is a rare treat indeed that should not go unnoticed. This album is amazing. The blues inspired Jimi Hendrix a lot in his rock star life, and now we see how good he really is. Every track on this cd is full of heart and soul. Any guitar, blues, or Hendrix fans should own this album.

Martin Scorsese came out with a great program on the blues.
He picked many artists who played the blues. None play the blues better than Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix was a blues based guitarist.
The one problem is that we never heard enough blues from Jimi Hendrix.
This CD compiles some songs he did do.
It starts out with "Red House" Red House of course was on his first album, Are you experienced. Red House is my favorite blues song by Hendrix ever.
Next is Voodoo Chile which is the one on Electic Ladyland, It has Steve Winwood on keyboard. Just listening to the two of them is worth it.
Come On, also from Electric Ladyland is next. It is solid.
He does an abbreviated version of Hear My Train A Comin, This is another favorite of mine and you hear Hendrix do it almost everytime you hear him live.
Its too bad , My Friend and Blue Window are solid.
Midnight Lightnin' to me is the real find on the CD.
It is another slow blues song played only the way Hendrix can play it.
One of my regrets of Jimi's early death is the fact he didnt play enough blues. I truely believe if he had lived we would have heard more blues.
I would recommend the Reprise CD called "Blues" also. This is worthy of any collection
