Exceptional recording...at an outrageous price!, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Martin Y Soler: Il Sogno, La Dora festeggiante (Audio CD)
This is no secret: the classical music industry is indeed a tough one to make profit. Selling a thousand copies is an achievement in itself. So, in order to collect their due, some recording companies like RCOC Records have come up with a new scam to rip off the music lovers out there, who are still honest enough (stupid?) not to illegally download new albums: they record on 2 CDs, 2 works that would have easily fit on a single one (32 min and 45 min respectively) and charge the full price of a double CD. What a better way to alienate a clientele scarce enough already!
Don't get me wrong on the quality of the music or the performance of the artists! This is top notch. A musical wonder that would have earned 10 stars. Since the 1990s, the few recordings of Martin y Soler's works have already unraveled a composer whose genius deserves a fair comparison to the masters of the classical period era. These two cantatas, La Dora festeggiante and Il Sogno, just confirm that Martin y Soler could indeed surpass Mozart. The soloists, Sunhae Im, Raffaella Milanesi and Magnus Stavelandare are up to the challenge, and Otero and his Royal Chamber Opera Company (on original instruments) are simply put, sublime.
However, the marketing technique is abjectly shameful, and only deserves the scorn of classical music lovers.
