I've played guitar for about 25 years. I owned a Martin D18 for many of those years but bought a used D35 after playing a few at the music store and hearing others. I chose the D35 over its more famous cousin the D28, because the 28 just seemed to lack the 'brightness'. I also just really liked the craftsmanship and awesome look to the 3 piece back. I've had my D35 for about 3 years and it has become my one and only performance guitar as well as what I play at home and write with. Even after 3 years, I find that it still surprises me. I can pull a new sound out of it every time I play it. It can do anything, any style of music and any type of finger work, strum, rhythm, picking, lead work, ect. It can take the heaviest pounding one minute and is very nimble and delicate the next. I've played other D35s and they all play very well. That 3 piece back gives it a sound that no other Martin or any other acoustic I've ever played has. I bought mine used and it had been played very little but the factory or dealer set-up was terrible. I payed to have it set-up by a reputable luther, which made a huge difference. I noticed mine will really react with the weather, humidity and tempature. This guitar has a definant personality and I truly believe it wants to be played. This will be an instrument to be passed down. A great guitar!

Background: professional church musician for 35 years, Fishman Rare Earth Blend soundhole pickup, Fishman Loudbox 100, medium sized church.

wow...is this guitar LOUD. But in a good way. I am a church music leader and switched to this from a D-16gt ( and before that a Taylor) The 16 has a sweet tone but not enough bottom for hard strumming. I have owned a dozen different Taylors (315, 510, GA, etc) and this is by far the best-projecting six string I have ever heard...and its not even "opened up."

I removed the Martin strings and replaced them with Elixir medium phosphor bronze, tuned down a half step since I am more of a tenor baritone.

One thing about this guitar is that it projects even if you pick or strum closer to the bridge..in fact it sounds like my D-16 a bit when I play there, but once I start moving over the soundhole that bass and midrange just start to rumble and shout.

The sustain is simply incredible on this thing. Fingerpicking has the best natural reverb I have ever heard in a guitar. I have never played a guitar and found myself saying "wow" so often. With very gentle picking or strumming you get a very full and lively sound.

I have been looking for something to replace my primary 12 string and this is it. With a little bit of chorus effect, played through a fishman Rare Earth Blend soundhole pickup, and a fishman amp, this easily replaces a 12 string but takes half the work to play.

I have watched/read dozens of reviews and videos, and the only critique people offer is that some consider the D-35 "muddy." This is because, until the top opens up, if you strum hard right over the soundhole, the bass is incredibly rich.
