Martin Stephenson - Unsung Hero !,
By pete shields "axepete" (Mansfield Notts England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Martin Stephenson (Audio CD)
This self titled album is a must for all Martin Stephenson fans and a great starting point for anyone new to the charms of the brilliant Geordie bard.
"Look Down, Look Down", "Slaughterman" and "Better Plan" are all slightly more uptempo versions than the original recordings. "Little Red Bottle" is awesome, the acoustic guitar work is sensational and the beautiful "Coleen" has a lovely harmonica solo. "Taker On The Globe" is Martin at his best. I have been a fan of Martins for twenty years now and have got to know him on a personal level. He is a very rare breed, a genious of a songwriter and entertainer and quite simply a beautiful human being. I urge anyone who is unfamiliar with his work to check out his amazing versatility.

ONE OF A KIND,

In his own words,Martin Stephenson has "escaped the music business".Right on.So has Virginia Astley, who he worked with on more than one occasion, starting as a support act and ending up last year to become the only artiste in the World to do a cover version of one of her songs. He once told me that he wanted to try and locate her to play flute on it but unfortuantely this never happenned.Martin's new album must rank as a first on the sense that it was made in his front room for a budget of FOUR DOLLARS!!! Here we have remakes of some of his earlier songs. His idea really and because he wanted to try them differently. Martin is one of the easiest going in the music business, who'll stop and meet fans, autograph anything with any mesages and never criticise a fellow artiste. He has written about unusual subjects and his music is easily accessible and best described as modern folk rather than Rock |
