About the Author
Born in Havana, Cuba in 1952, Andres R. Alonso moved to Fairfax , Virginia when his family was forced to leave Cuba in 1961. He currently resides with his wife and two children in Roanoke, Virginia. He became a professional photographer in 1982, working for The Northern Virginia Sun and The Loudoun Times-Mirror. In 1986 he became a free-lance photographer with his main client being The Washington Post. Since then his work has appeared in many national publications including USA Today, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Sporting News, Newsday and for corporations such as Marriott, Norfolk Southern, First Union, Georgia pacific, NCAA, Tehabi Books, and Erickson-GE. His photographs have also been used here and abroad by the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse and CBS Television. His photos were recently featured in NASCARs 50th anniversary book Thunder of America and he has illustrated books for MacMillan/McGraw Hill. Alonsos photography work is also used by many private schools, colleges and universities throughout the United States to illustrate their admission view books and sports programs.
