Editorial Reviews

Onyx presents the first complete CD cycle of Martinu s symphonies, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Jirí Belohlávek. These works, which are a major contribution to 20th century symphonic literature, are still undervalued. Spanning the years surrounding the Second World War, they capture the turmoil, hopes and fears of the composer and his homeland a homeland that suffered unimaginable cruelties under the Nazis. At the end of the war, Martinu was the only major Czech composer of his generation to have survived. Throughout these sometimes-turbulent works, the irrepressible Czech spirit survives.

Format: Audio CD
Bohuslav Martinu did not write his first symphony until he was 51 years old. The composer and his wife had just immigrated to the United States when Martinu received a commission from Serge Koussevitzky for a work for large orchestra. Although Martinu claimed he had felt himself unprepared for composing music for such large forces, his symphony is assured and confident. Martinu's signature swirling scales shows up at the beginning of the first movement, which Jiri Belohlavek gives plenty of space before launching into the brisk opening melody. The Scherzo moves at a brisk and exciting pace and the Largo is given a heartfelt rendering. The finale is uplifting and energetic; a better performance would be hard to imagine.

Martinu composed his next four symphonies one each year. The Second Symphony (1943) was a commission from Czech emerges and focuses on ensemble playing like a concerto grosso. The Third Symphony followed in 1944 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Serge Koussevisty's tenure with the Boston Symphony, and is in three movements. It is an intense and dramatic work. The opening movement is stark and brooding followed by a somber middle movement. The finale is stormy with three quieter interludes but has a joyous passage near the conclusion that has been attributed to news of the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy. The Fourth Symphony was composed in a few weeks during April and June 1945 and expresses the composer's joy and optimism. It is in four movements and from the first luminous bars the feeling of joy reign. The second movement is a Scherzo followed by glorious, heartfelt Largo. The finale has a brief dark melody that givens way to a dance melody that dominates.

I bought this for my husband because he loves Martinu. We sent back one recording of Martinu that we didn't like, but this one is awesome. He says this recording "brings out the color and emotion of the music. It is great on a top-notch stereo because of the huge dynamic range, so don't bother playing it on a cheap stereo system. The BBC symphony orchestra is fantastic."

excellent recording, only wish it was on sacd, martinu's symphonies are outstanding, and should be above standard in every classical concert performance.
