So I've heard of Marttiini knives but never bought one until now. I figured for around $60, this was a good deal for a knife like this so I made the buy.

I was pleasantly surprised by the workmanship of this knife. It really is a beautiful piece. And the picture can be a bit deceiving, but this is actually one pretty hefty knife. The blade along the spine and main part of the tang is a good 1/4 inch thick. The blade and tang are forged as a single piece with the curly birch scales being almost 'inlaid' into the tang. This is also a deceptively heavier knife.

The blade material is 420HC (according to Marttiini's site) which is evident in the extra work I had to do to get the blade hair shaving sharp (it didn't come particularity sharp outta the box). That's not an issue for me as I have other 420HC knives and knew it takes more effort to sharpen and maintain the blades edge. It is what it is. The blade is a traditional Scandinavian blade profile with a Scandi (Saber) grind. Overall excellent in fit and finish.

The sheathe is pretty decent. Though for me there is some concern for the retaining strap. The retaining strap is fairly thin leather. About half as thick as on most of my leather sheaths. And because is where it sits, the knife edge drags right across it when removing or inserting the knife into the sheath. With a thicker retaining strap I wouldn't be worried, but the thinner leather means I will have to keep an eye on it to ensure it is not getting cut through little by little.

Also, and this is not a bad thing, the bottom half of the sheath has a plastic insert that the blade of the knife inserts into. This, presumably, helps ensure the point and edge at the bottom does not slice through the leather of the sheath.

The knife is a bit smaller than what I had in mind, but it is still very comfortable to hold. The fit and finish is fantastic, and I love the Curly Birch handle scales. The design takes a normal full tang knife to the next level, and I would not hesitate to put this knife through heavy use if I had to. Sharpness was ok out of the box, but with after a few minutes on the spyderco sharpmaker I got a shaving sharp edge. The steel appears to be a variant of the 440 stainless steel, but I'm not sure exactly what it is.

The leather sheath was also nice. It looks well built and sturdy.

When I bought this knife it only had one review on amazon, so I thought I should write this review. Overall a very solid, and underrated knife. For the price I would highly recommend it.

Just got it today, one day earlier than the delivery time they had promised -- the knife is extremely rugged and also very attractive, it would be capable of any chore any outdoorsman could think of---I had been curious when I ordered it, having never even heard of the Marttiini brand, as to how well it would stand up to a critical eye---did real well, the handle scales are a great color and very well fitted to the integral spine and bolster, blade grind looks perfect and it's very well finished. Although not shaving sharp out of the box, with just a slight touch of the stone, it is now---
The sheath is a very clever design, a pocket sheath with an integrated snap strap and a leather belt loop that is a separate piece, fastened to the sheath with a metal ring through an eyelet so that the sheath hangs free very much like a sword scabbord.
All in all, I'd have to say this is in all ways a five star knife, I'm pretty picky quality-wise and this is a great looking, strong, well crafted knife and being made in Finland rather than China is a real strong point also ---- a good buy, I say that without any hesitation ------ John, New Orleans

I expected a scandinavian sharp blade. what i got was a butter knife. I'm not a knife nut who thinks only knives that I sharpen are sharp, but I do know the difference between a hunting/bush craft knife and a butter knife. This a butter knife. I also expected a decent sheath. The knife retaining snapp broke the second time I used It. I don't trust the hanging loop on the sheath to confidently secure what could be my primary survival tool to my person. The tang on the back of the handle is not rounded well. I fear that when performing a cutting task for anything longer than a short time , it would cause me great discomfort.
These problems aside, the knife is visually beautiful, very apealling, feels sturdy in my hand, and I will work with it to make it a trusted out door tool companion. It would have been a real joy if I did't have to fix these problems

I collect knives and have many Marttiini knives. The workmanship on all their products is top notch. Because there is so much steel in this knife, particularly the tang, it's a bit heavy. I don't look at this as a negative. It makes the knife feel very sturdy in the hand. It's essentially a big block of steel. The curly birch inlays are beautiful. It's a great combination of utility and artistry. The four star rating is based on the material, workmanship, and beauty. I have not used this knife in the field, so I didn't feel I could give it a full 5 stars.
