As A CD Release Of A Vinyl Album This Is Skimpy,

While RCA is busy re-releasing, with additional tracks, some of their Elvis Presley CDs which, when first issued, were simply CD versions of 10- to 12-track vinyl albums, Columbia doesn't seem to be following suit.
Even when this first came out as an LP it was a bit misleading as neither Red River Valley nor Street Of Laredo were hits in the accepted sense of the word (i.e., charted singles on either the Country or Billboard Pop charts). In addition, five more tracks were uncharted B-sides of hits: Saddle Tramp b/o Big Iron (# 5 Country/# 20 Pop Hot 100 in spring 1960); I Told My Heart b/o Is There Any Chance (# 31 Hot 100 in summer 1960); Ride Cowboy Ride b/o Five Brothers (# 26 Country/# 74 Hot 100 in fall 1960 - and NOT here); A Time And A Place For Everything b/o Ballad Of The Alamo (# 34 Hot 100 in November 1960); and Like All The Other Times b/w Don't Worry (# 1 Country for TEN weeks/# 3 Hot 100 in early 1961). In addition to the five hits just mentioned, the only other one here is El Paso, which hit # 1 Country for SEVEN weeks and # 1 Hot 100 for two weeks in late 1959/early 1960. The flip of that was Running Gun, and it's not included here. Nor are there any liner notes or discography of the contents included. So why did I assign 4 stars for such a meagre release? Simply because Is There Any Chance and Ballad Of The Alamo are among the hardest-to-find in quality CD format for Marty. And make no mistake, the AAD sound is just right. So is the price.

Great CD, these songs sound just as amazing as they did when I was a child. My father would play his Vinyl albums while he did home improvements. IMO there is not a bad song on this CD. Sure they are bigger compilations out there, but this CD has some of my most favorite songs by Marty Robbins. Also, these songs do not appear to have been altered like so many re-releases are today. If you like this type of music, you won't be disappointed.

This is one of my favorite albums from my childhood. I loved to listen to Mary Robbins sing every song on this album. I still have the vinyl of this and a cassette! While I love my classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal bands, Mary Robbins is one of those rare performers that crossed genres. His voice is a classic and still sounds good to me! He was a fabulous balladeer. If you like this type of story music, this is a great one to get.
