A young band at a creative apex,
By N. Pierce (Southern Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Martyrium (Audio CD)
Martyrium was the first full length album recorded by the Norwegian Sorrow Metal band Antestor. Originally recorded in 1994 but not made widely available until recently, the music catches the band during a transition time between the doom-laden death metal that characterized the EPs The Defeat of Satan and Despair and the atmospheric black metal that was coming into vogue at the time, and appeared on subsequent releases. The results show a young band with amazing talent performing some of the most exciting Christian music ever recorded. While no Antestor release is sub-par by any means, Martyrium is tied with Return of the Black Death for variety, musicality, and emotion. Vocalist Martyr never topped the vocal performance on this record, and the riffing and drumming are fresh and inspired. If you're more familiar with The Forsaken or ROTBD, Martyrium will take a while to appreciate, but it will be well worth your time. If you've not heard Antestor before this is a great starting place. (Just make sure you're aware of the band's morphing style.) Pick this one up at all costs.

This is a really good CD...Antestor is one of my favorite metal bands, and I was ecstatic when I got my copy of this. I listen to a lot of metal secular and Christian and this is one of those albums that is true and raw...Dark emotion and pain bleed from this CD. I suggest you pick it up...
