I have been an owner of multiple consoles over the years. From the NES, to the SNES and Genesis, than to the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64, and followed closely by the Sega Dreamcast, I have always had fun with each console generation. One of my all time favorite consoles, to this day, has always been the Dreamcast. With highly unique classics such as Power Stone and Sonic Adventure available for the system, it has always had a great line up of games. However, there was always one Dreamcast game that got more playing time out of me than any other game, and that was Marvel VS Capcom 2.

Building upon the success of fighting games before it, such as Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men VS Street Fighter, and Marvel VS Capcom 1, Marvel VS Capcom 2 is a chaotically fast and addictive game. The gameplay focuses around teams of three characters fighting it out against other teams. The character roster is deep, focusing on both the Capcom side and the Marvel side of the game's two character worlds.

With 56 characters available to play as, the game is intense, and match ups are always very unique. The characters include:

Marvel side

Blackheart
Cable
Captain America
Colossus
Cyclops
Doctor Doom
Gambit
Hulk
Iceman
Iron Man
Juggernaut
Magneto
Marrow
Omega Red
Psylocke
Rogue
Sabretooth
Sentinel
Shuma-Gorath
Silver Samurai
Spider-Man
Spiral
Storm
Thanos
Venom
War Machine
Wolverine
Wolverine (Bone Claws)

Capcom side

Akuma
Amingo
Anakaris
B.B. Hood
Cammy
Captain Commando
Charlie
Chun-Li
Dan
Dhalsim
Felicia
Guile
Hayato
Jill Valentine
Jin
Ken
M. Bison
Mega Man
Morrigan
Roll
Ruby Heart
Ryu
Sakura
Servbot
SonSon
Strider Hiryu
Tron Bonne
Zangief

That's a total of 28 characters, per side, making the roster highly balanced. The benefit that I really got out of the new version of the game is the way that all of the cast is unlocked upon initially downloading the game. This is a huge improvement over the Dreamcast version, in which you were forced to complete Arcade mode multiple times, in order to earn enough points to "purchase" new characters; a task that was truly time consuming, and tedious. It is true, however, that many characters simply do overpower others on the game, such as Sentinel, however, with enough practice, it's actually quite simple to win as any character available on the game.

The graphics have been improved over the Dreamcast iteration, making the colors more vibrant, and the animations much more fluid than they were in the past. The graphics won't compare to games such as Battle Fantasia, Super Street Fighter IV, or BlazBlue, but they are still very solid, and crisp looking. There are no issues with the framerate, and the game feels great to play on the PlayStation 3.

Online play is now an extra mode added to the re-release of Marvel VS Capcom 2, and featurs a spectator mode which allows the player to watch the fights of other users. The menus have been reworked as well, looking much better than the original "hexagon" layout for the menus that the original Dreamcast version had.

All in all, the game looks great, plays great, and feels great, on the PlayStation 3, adding new features such as online play, and tweaking subtle things such as layout. The gameplay is unchanged, still relying on hectic, fast paced, chaotic fights between two teams of three, where even the A.I. can be difficult at times on higher difficulty levels. Getting this game now will definitely help put anyone in the mood for the upcoming sequel due in a few months. This is a must buy for anyone who is a fighting game fan.

I played this game when it first came out in the arcades and it was so much fun. I sucked at it, and still sort of suck at it, but being able to play a huge cast of characters from the Marvel and Capcom worlds was exhilarating. That, mixed with some great animation, smooth and fast game-play, and cheesy quotes made for one of the best fighters I've ever played.

I downloaded this on PSN when I got my PS3, and I was slightly confused as this code has you download the demo and unlock code. I guess you have to download the demo first, and then this code unlocks the game for you. All the characters are there right from the beginning.
The only gripe I have is that there are some lag issues with the menu at times, but that may just be my PS3.

Not a flaw on amazon's end. The game itself is a good price on amazon but I've had nothing but problems with the playstation's download interface. Be sure and google how to get your game once its downloaded or you'll be wondering about it for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars MvC2 Over SSFIV Any Day, February 2, 2010

Marvel vs Capcom 2 is one of the best fighting games ever. MvC2 is quite easy to pick up but difficult to master, and while it may not look as good as more recent titles, for instance BlazBlue, it still is incredibly fun. This downloadable version is the same as the Dreamcast version from a decade ago with one major change, the addition of the multiplayer. Considering the original Dreamcast versions can go for well over $300 this is a great buy. The online play is great and still active but be warned there are alot of skilled players, nevertheless MvC2 is a must buy for any gaming fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Ridiculous Fun!, March 6, 2011

There are so many crazy characters so choose from. They make funny moves and sound. Sometimes I forget who I am (this happens when your character moves to the opposite side of the screen from where it started). So I choose 3 of the same people for the fight.

Just Purchased the game today. Took a while to download, but it was worth it. Its not the greatest game ever, but its a good way to pass the time on a boring day. Everyone's story outcome is the same, and the graphics are pretty good. A nice amount of characters (56), half I don't even know, but thats ok. Overall a good fighting game, but nothing special. 4/5.

Better than the first game, love the additional characters! I'm a huge comic book fan/marvel fan and an original coin op street fighter fan so this is the perfect marriage fighting experience. The only reason I didn't give it a 5th star are due to sprites/graphics becoming a bit outdated by today's standards compared to the new Street fighter IV or even an older title like Guilty gear X.

Great game. Fast download depending on your wifi connection.
Just the bad part is that you don't have a hard copy so if something were to go wrong i.e. your PS3 broke, your memory is fried, or you want to transfer hard drive, etc. you would have to redownload this again. And even then, I'm not sure if they allow multiple downloads.
