"Awesome" is the word used by my 7 year old superhero-nut. He was so excited to get this in the mail. I wished I could have taken a video of him opening the package! He loved it. Two weeks later, he still loved it. The only problem for me was that I now have to order a Captain America costume to go along with it.
How does the shield work? You insert (I think it is 5) foam disks into a compartment. As you squeeze the trigger by the handle, the disks fly out, one by one, toward your target. They don't come out hard enough to hurt anybody. I know. I was shot in the face repeatedly.

Note: Don't forget to buy 4-AA batteries. 8^)

Trigger didn't work at all out of the box. The motor ran but it would not release the discs.

I took it apart to diagnose the problem, and found the system of spring-loaded plastic levers wasn't moving enough upon a trigger pull to enable the spinning belt to grab the disc to launch. Though all the parts were failing to move their full intended range, one of the smaller springs in particular seemed to be a primary culprit. I stretched this spring out to give it more recoil ability, and was able to get the shield to sporadically launch a dozen or so discs before the spring compressed down too much again and it stopped launching altogether again.

I was actually impressed with the no-cut packaging (kids are always sad how long it takes to get their new toys out of the zip-tied over-taped packages). Unfortunately the packaging doesn't allow a way for you to test the trigger mechanism before opening entirely to see if yours is a potential dud.

Prepare for potential disappointment with this purchase.

My son and I are avid superhero fans and this was a gift that he wanted for Christmas. When we opened it up he began to play with it immediately shooting everyone in the house with the launching discs. Initially, we thought the shield may have been a dud as we couldn't get the discs to launch, but then we realized we didn't turn the power switch on. After that it's been all fun. My son loves it.

The shield is awesome and it throws really cool discs which are like mini frisbees which i colored like Captain America's shield which throw like the flying shield my star is broken because I used the shield as a form of defense
against my brother's fist but it protected me so I'm happy. It protected me so it might protect you.

If you're a hardcore comics fan who feels like every "replica" like this should be 100% accurate, you're going to be missing out on something that's a blast to play with. Who really cares that Cap throws his shield rather than using it to fire discs? I mean, would you rather have kids getting hit with foam discs, or clobbered by a 12" hard plastic projectile?

It's very simple to set up and use, though an adult will most likely need to load the batteries, which are in a compartment secured with a crosspoint screw. Five foam discs load into a chamber under the star by pressing a double-latch--prevents accidental opening--and swinging the blue field out and away.

Then, throw the power switch (which is probably better-hidden than intended), pull the trigger attached to the handle and take the Red Skull down!

It fires quickly and easily--not much pressure required on the handle trigger--but sometimes you'll get a few misfires before the next disc goes. It's a little noisy, but no worse than a dust-buster. The primary minus I see is that there are only five discs, which are the sort of semi-firm foam that's easily damaged. In other words, playing fetch with the dog is probably not going to work out well in the long run.

Since the chamber holds five discs, the minute you lose or destroy one, you no longer have a full load. It should have come with a double ration or at least made it obvious where you can get new ones.

If you don't care about accuracy, it's actually a very nice-looking, solid toy that will go much better with your kid's Halloween costume than the cheap replica that's likely to be bundled with it.

My son had been asking for this toy ever since it came out. We are a household of MARVEL Comic fans. My husband especially is a Captain America fan. So when I told my son daddy was sending him a present for his 5th birthday (my husband is currently stationed overseas) he instantly knew what he was going to get him lol. He was very excited. I took it out of the shipping box and wrapped it the night before his birthday while he was sleeping. Sadly I didnt keep the box or return label as our apartment was too small to have all of these huge boxes laying around (big mistake). He opened it on the morning of his birthday with his dad watching via Skype. He was smiling ear to ear, but when we put the brand new batteries in and attempted to use it....HUGE let down, it did not shoot at all, the motor did not run, the lever did not work all the way, it was useless other than for looks. I expected a lot better from such a popular toy making company, my husband was of course upset because he wanted to at least get our son a good gift since he couldn't be here to share his bday with him in person and of course my son had gotten his hopes up for nothing...basically dont waste your time its junk.
