5.0 out of 5 stars overall pretty good, March 15, 2004
This review is from: Marvel Mangaverse Volume 1 (X-Men) (Paperback)
Just when you thought you had seen it all, Marvel does this. They've taken some of our favorite characters and turned magna on them. And you've got some of the best here. The Hulk has one of the more interesting changes--he's become a huge Godzilla-like creature, and he is what threads the stories together. The Spider-Man story is a good one. Keeps the basics and turns it samuri like. Really well done. Everyone's favorite, the X-Men are here. They are real uneven. I think a better job could have been done on them (Their Wolverine is really weak). Iron Man has recieved an update and is inhabited by Ms. Stark. And Stark Industries threads some minor Marvel characters into the story. Dr. Strange has been turned into a much cooler character than he ever has been before. The Avengers have become the Iron Avengers (a Power Ranger type team) consisting of Captain, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Vision. They combine to become Ultimate Iron Man. And they battle Apocalypse (who has a much better look) and his Horsemen: Sinister, Juggernaut, White QUeen, and Archangel, and theirs is a good transformation. America, Nemo is an megalomaniac leader of Atlantis bent on taking over the surface world. The Fantastic Four have been given a real interesting change, one that I'm not quite sure how to describe. Ghost Rider, who I normally don't like, gets an interesting theological bent and turns into a good story. The Punisher is weak. Real weak. I won't even go into her other than this: S&M. And even Thor, mostly unchanged, makes a brief appearance.

I'll say this, it was interesting, and as a whole, quite enjoyable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst comic book I've ever read, January 12, 2010
This review is from: Marvel Mangaverse Volume 1 (X-Men) (Paperback)
Simply put, this is the worst travesty of a comic I have ever had the misfortune of reading. I have loved Marvel comics for years and have a passing interest in Manga, so I was warily curious about how this would turn out. It's awful. The character designs are terrible, the plot is weak and unispired, and the dialogue sounds like it was written by an eight year old. Save yourself the wasted time and brain cells and avoid this series.

MARVEL MANGAVERSE is a collection of one-shot specials showing an alternative anime-styled version of the Marvel Universe. These 8 issues paved the way for the Marvel Mangaverse comic book series and the new comic, Spider Man-Legend Of The Spider Clan. It starts off with the Mangaverse version of the Avengers lead by Irongirl testing a new technology that attracts the attention of the criminal orginization Hydra and the rebellious forces of the underwater nation of Atlantis lead by Prince Namor. This causes the arrivial of the gigantic Godzilla-like Hulk to go on a rampage in New York. The Avengers assemble their giant robot, Iron Man, to stop it, while keeping it out of the clutches of the evil mutant, Apocalypse. Then, the meta-altered Fantastic Four tangles with the interdimensional menace, Annihilus. Ghost Rider roles in next to try and take the monsterous Hulk on his own. A Kabuki version of Punisher is introdueced next. Plus, Spider Man is redone as a ninja kid. The X-Men lead by Storm bring up the rear. Finally, all the heroes combine their efforts along with Dr. Strange and a very anime catgirl version of Tigra to stop The Hulk, Hydra, and Namor to save the world. But thanks to the hammer of Thor, the day is saved, but only at the cost of two of Marvel's greatest heroes(who never would've ended up together like THAT in the regular comics!). Definately check this graphic novel out! It features the talents of Ben Dunn, Lea Hernandez, Adam Warren, and Udon Studios. A must for all anime and comic book fans!
