5.0 out of 5 stars Buscema at his best, May 26, 2009

This review is from: Marvel Masterworks Avengers (Volume 6) (Hardcover) (Hardcover)
I normally settle for the less expensive Essential and Showcase lines in my collection but reproduction on some of the books reprinted here were poor in the less expensive B/W edition so I splurged. I ownly own a handful of masterworks reprinting I feel were the best comics ever and favorites I look through over and over. John Buscema was a fairly new addition to the Marvel Bullpen at the time these stories originally appeared and, I feel, represent his best work. He and other pro's like Gil Kane were influenced by the great Jack Kirby and it shows by the energy in the art. Buscema's work changed over the years as did his brother Sal who John said he preferred to ink his work as it was closest to the way he drew. I was eleven years old when these stories appeared and Avengers was my favorite book bar none. The X-men who appear in this book were hurting in sales at the time before their big revamp. Seeing Big John's rendition of the X-men was and still is a real treat. Don Heck and Gene Colan also did some of their best work on this title at this time. For my money art-wise and story-wise it never got better than this. Writer Roy Thomas gives an interesting and informative introduction.
