4.0 out of 5 stars For Captin Marvel Lovers
If you like the character Captain Marvel, then this book is a must. This is a good way to get a good feel for Captain Marvel before diving into the Death of Captain Marvel. This book shows us the early strugles he had balancing his loyalty to his alien race and a growing fondness for the people of earth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Marvel, bring Mar-Vell out in paperback!
I always loved Marvel's Captain Marvel, especially in his green uniform days. The highlights of this collection would be MSH #13 & #14, and Captain Marvel #1 (which are rare or expensive). Gene Colan stayed on the title through #4 (& then was replaced w/ varying degrees of success by Don Heck & Dick Ayers). Though Vince Colletta was not Colan's best inker, in 1967/68,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Marvel, bring Mar-Vell out in paperback!, March 20, 2011
This review is from: Marvel Masterworks Captain Marvel 1 (Hardcover)
I always loved Marvel's Captain Marvel, especially in his green uniform days. The highlights of this collection would be MSH #13 & #14, and Captain Marvel #1 (which are rare or expensive). Gene Colan stayed on the title through #4 (& then was replaced w/ varying degrees of success by Don Heck & Dick Ayers). Though Vince Colletta was not Colan's best inker, in 1967/68, Gene's work was strong & definite enough that most of what he did looked good. Arnold Drake could not compare in writing w/ Stan Lee or Roy Thomas. The character went through many changes in powers, mission, foes & continuity from issue to issue is a little weak. This was Marvel's 1st out-&-out Sci-Fi character (just before Silver Surfer got a title), so you can see them weaving back & forth btwn space opera & earth-based melodrama. The prices for this hardcover are absurd. Marvel, please bring out Captain Marvel volume 1 in paperback!!!

Here in the 50th edition of the Marvel Masterwork series we find Captain Mar Vell arriving on Earth in order to assess the Earth's defenses agianst a possible future attack by the star spanning Kree empire. Once on Earth it's not long before Mar Vell aquires the moniker of "hero" after defeating the massive Sentry who was thought disabled by the Fantastic Four. Mar Vell's loyalty is then tested to the full. How can he save the Earthlings from the likes of Super Skrull, Quasimodo the Living Computer and Prince Namor and still keep his Kree superiors believing he is acting on their behalf? Can one man be both "hero" and "destroyer" at the same time?
It's wonderful to see Captain Marvel get the Masterwork treatment in this glossy hardback. Here's a book from the Silver Age of Marvel that is gold in quality. Buy it now........
