Daredevil - The Fun Superhero,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil Vol. 3 (Hardcover)
Perhaps it's my age, but this is the character I have always chosen to think of when I think of Daredevil: Daredevil, the Fun Superhero. There's a facial feature you see in these stories that are hardly seen in any current comic: the smile. In spite of everything, Daredevil seems to be having fun. These are the kinds of stories one would read on a sunny Saturday because there was a brightness and cheerfulness in both the stories and the art. There's some irony there considering the artist is Gene Colan, who drew the longest running horror comic, Tomb of Dracula and became known for his shadowy work. But here there is more light than shadow and the Daredevil-in-motion shots have never been duplicated before or since. I cannot say enough about Gene Colan's work.
And, of course, Stan Lee, who in The Son of Origins of Marvel Comics, called Daredevil his favorite creation, keeps the Man Without Fear at his wisecracking best, all while creating tight, plausible and entertaining stories. The Masked Marauder series, the Leap Frog, the Stilt Man and best of all, the first DD Annual all make for stories worth reading again and again. While many highly talented artists and writers followed, no one, in my mind topped this work by Lee and Colan and no one ever will.
