This review is from: Marvel Masterworks: Golden Age Marvel Comics - Volume 2 (Hardcover)
This is the second volume of the reprints of the flagship for timely( marvel) comics in the 1940's. Marvel Mystery Comics featuring issues 5-7. This is vintage stuff with great art from Bill Everet, carl burgos and Paul Gustavon and others.
It features the early tales of the sub-mariner, the original Human torch , the angel and others like electro the robot, feret dectective and kazar the jungle man.(not the 60's version) The reprints look great and the stories are golden age and well done for that era. There is actual progression in some of these stories as the sub-mariner stories are a continueing storyline. Same with the human torch and kazar as well. Thankfully this isn't just a bunch of scans of yellowing comics but actual reconstructions that look fantastic. The first volume didn't look as good as this one at all so that's another plus. The masterworks are great books for sure it's a shame we can't get the same treatment for other golden age titles like doll man and other because they are marvel comics but at least we get to read these great stories in a quality reprint on great paper. After all there's no way most of us could even think about paying many thousands for one comic book and even then the original comics never look as good as the masterworks hardcovers because they were printed on cheap paper. So sit back and enjoy these great vintage golden age stories that should have been reprinted ages ago.
