2.0 out of 5 stars Not their best work, August 24, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Both Roy Thomas and Gil Kane have done some wonderful work. But this is not either creaters best. I vaguely remembered this title from the 70s, and wanted to have a look a this collection. I was pretty disappointed. The SciFi-ish story is not very original; mostly culled from The Island of Doctor Moreau. The Gil Kane issues here are ok... tho, the last few issues are another lesser artist. For Warlock fans only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required prelude to a classic gem, January 30, 2008
This collection is wonderful fun all by itself. Full of "relevent" 70s story telling and stunning Gil Kane artwork. But it also serves as a wonderful warm up to Jim Starlin's classic original run on the character. Starlin's Warlock space opera is widely considered the greatest comic sci-fi epic ever and puts today's comic "events" to shame. A great loss the run was cut short and Starlin didn't get to play out the entire story as he planned. If you like Babylon 5, you'll love the next volume of Warlock. Have fun reading this edition and get ready for the ride of your life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing idea but not fully realized, March 21, 2008
I remember reading these as original comics, so my reaction is probably colored by nostalgia. First, the good news: Roy Thomas combined a then-popular sci-fi idea of a duplicate earth on the other side of the sun with the Jesus movement, mixed in Jack Kirby's Him character, and came up with an attempt to create "serious fiction" in a comic book. Perhaps he wanted to see if he could top Stan Lee's Silver Surfer run. It's an intriguing idea and he certainly had Gil Kane at the top of his game. (Kane had also done his own messiah-related project "Blackmark.")

Unfortunately, the series never catches enough momentum. First, when Gil Kane isn't penciling, the intensity just isn't there. Secondly, the High Evolutionary/God figure isn't fully realized--he seems to be motivated only to fit Thomas's allegory. Thirdly, the "relevant" teens in the piece are also cardboard characters.

This volume does include the Hulk issues where readers can see the end to Warlock's original incarnation. Thomas says in his intro that some readers were offended because he was introducing religious elements, but he claims, even at the time, that he knew it was "only" a comic book. Yet Thomas was clearly more concerned with creating something "cutting-edge" than creating good story-telling--and that might have made this cutting-edge.

I gave it a 4 for it's historical value and that it IS a complete volume; however, I was disappointed--my nostalgic memories were stronger than the actual product which is probably more like a 3

The book came in very good condition and arrived promptly. I'm very pleased with the service. I bought the first issue of "The Power of Warlock" back in 1975. Read more
