The X-Men began with a bang as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Magneto, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Vanisher, etc. But they left after awhile and turned the book over to Roy Thomas (one of his first regular assignments), Werner Roth and Don Heck and the book declined. Despite battles with the Juggernaut, a rare guest appearance by Spider-Man and various stunts (new costumes! Professor X dies!), the book seemed to be marking time. The title will pick up dramatically in volume 5 with art by the legendary Jim Steranko and get even better in volume 6 when Roy returns and teams up with Neal Adams. Sadly, none of that appears in this book. I would recommend this collection only to completists.

If you are like me and you never got the chance to read or own the early issues of the X-Men, then this volume is a must have! The volume contains issue #32-42, and there are some really good ones. The Juggernaut returns in #32 and #33; Mole Man (usually battling the Fantastic Four) is in #34; the Banshee is back, and so is Spider-Man in #35; the Blob is back in #38; and the team gets new costumes in #39! Also included, are back stories of how Prof. X started to put the team together by first bringing in Scott Summers who will become Cyclops.

The remark of the story about the change of uniform is quite telling: Mr. Thomas is trying to evolve and to develop more interesting characters... well done, although still a little bit naive... well, sign of the times

Marvel Masterworks is a good chance to go back and compare our images and understanding of what does it mean to be a hero _at least, it helps me to better understand the social values we are projecting in them_

Nice edition

What was once a failing Marvel title is now a mainstay, so to speak. This excellent collection covers Roy Thomas' valiant attempt to save this title. A great read for nostalgic fans of early X adventures.
