Romance Re-Done,
By Alexandra Cenni "Poisoned Rationality" (hamilton, nj USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Marvel Romance Redux (Marvel Comics) (Paperback)
You can accurately say that this is either a hit or miss sort of comic collection. The art itself is from the old Marvel Romance comics line and the dialogue is what has been rewritten often to an outlandish degree (such as in the story "They Said I was...Insane!" in which the heroine of the story is dead certain all the women she sees are dating aliens, instead of what I'm assuming was originally a story about a woman in love with her boss).
This is basically what would happen if the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys decided to re-write Harlequin romances. There's an entertaining value to the comics--not just for the dialogue but also in the artwork and the scenes of a 'daily life' back in the 1950's/1960's. The fact the nurses wore outfits more akin to a Playboy pin-up spread then anything remotely serviceable, smoking being allowed EVERYWHERE (hospitals, offices, diners, department stores) or even the obvious objectification of women...that's all amusing to see. Is this the funniest thing ever? Not really, but it was a pleasant diversion and an interesting way to revisit old comics that, if published now would probably cause most feminist groups heart attacks. |
