After reading all of this I'm surprised at the topical variety of Marvell's work. Many a love poem, yes. And enough with shepherds and shepherdesses in them to make you cheer for his breaking through into "My Coy Mistress". But he also does long, bitter political satires and many more topical things. A wonderfully talented poet. Great word music. His extended metaphysical metaphors are refreshingly old-fashioned. You will never miss the point. Like most poets, he has four or five really outstanding poems, but the others are well worth reading to get the flavor and drift of his sophisticated mind and milieu. Nice size of book, good print and paper. A visual and tactile pleasure to read as well as an intellectual one.

A generous selection of poems from a major English poet who has gotten substantive attention from T.S. Eliot and is well worth reading, but not at all always easy to follow. Patience and having some available interpretive guide does help.
