Editorial Reviews

Review

Harold O Neal s best tunes slink like a panther. --Kevin Whitehead, Fresh Air, NPR

He comes with a full, orchestral piano sound,
rippling, weaving, punching ... mysteriously sweet and
ruminating ballads. --Ben Ratliff, New York Times

Product Description

On this breakout jazz piano concept influenced by the classical Phantasy, Harold O Neal
takes up the reins at the roots of jazz improvisation. Here at the juncture between romance and modernism,
Harold O Neal performs a set of new compositions
that are by turns lilting and rhapsodic.
Influenced by Ravel and Gershwin, the music also
recalls the modern sensibilities of Satie, Debussy,
and Ellington.
The virtuosic and masterful solo jazz piano is stirring,
beautiful, and will be cherished by both jazz and
classical enthusiasts.
This is an audiophile recording made on a period instrument.

This is a wonderful recording of wonderful music. Sophisticated yet unassuming, precise with an easy flow. If you allow, it will transport you. The dynamic range and expressive playing makes active listening in a quiet environment best. It is certainly not background or car driving music in my opinion. Mr. O'Neal deserves the listener's full attention and rewards with an artful, subtle, nuanced performance of his music. Bravo.

I initially heard Marvelous Fantasy by borrowing from the library. I was taken by the black & white photography. When I listened to this release I was quite impressed. It is solo acoustic piano..reminded me of a Phillip Glass release (Solo Piano). It also reminded me of David Sancious (9 Piano Improvisations). Quite enjoyable.& meditative.

O'Neal has produced a fascinating set of casual, or are they simply ephemeral, themes you can plug into the cd player in your car and drive around for days.
