4.0 out of 5 stars IT'S EARLY SOUL, December 9, 2003
By
This review is from: Marvelous Marv Johnson / More Marvelous Marv (Audio CD)
Marv Johnson has a sweet voice and this CD is a delight to hear. Why he did not have more hits is beyond me. The first 12 tracks are a mix of America popular songs and R'n'B. The stanadards are sung well and quite straight and you get to hear how good his voice was. The others are good too, the big smash,'You got what it takes' and the beautiful ballad 'Don't leave me'(where he sounds as good as Sam Cook). Tracks 13-27 move away from the standards and are good old R'n'B from the late 50's. It's interesting to note that Marv was one of the original Motown stars and many of the tracks have an early Motown feel to them. In short a fantastic CD for someone that loves early soul and appreciates a beautiful young voice singing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection by an R&B pioneer, May 27, 2010

Marv Johnson had just two Top 10 hits during his run in the late '50s and early 60s but Berry Gordy Jr. is indebted to this artist in no small measure. Gordy wrote some of Johnson's songs that attracted notice, such as "Come to Me" and others that were published by Gordy's Jobete music company. Johnson had a sweet, honeyed voice and stylish delivery not unlike Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations who went on to solo success in the '70s. The inclusion of "More Marv Johnson", a collector's item today, shows Johnson's versatility and ability to handle varied material that should have gained him more popularity at that time. Some of the best songs here are B sides, such as "Whisper" and "Don't Leave Me". "All the Love I've Got", with its frenetic flute accompaniment, is another song by Johnson that is one of his very best recordings.

Hardly anyone remembers Marv but he was the 2nd big star (male) to record for Motown back in the late 50's and early 60's.
