A Disappointment,

I'm a math teacher who bought this book with great enthusiasm. Alas, the author is no story teller and the themes are way over kids' heads. The kind of charm and accessibility that you find in books like Eric Bell's "Men of Mathematics" is missing. The book is aimed at the elementary or middle school student, but the themes are way too abstract. You'd need a background in higher math to appreciate them, as the author concentrates on the mathematical theorems, not the human interest in the mathematicians that discovered them. I tossed out my copy.

Kendall Haven relates the origins of math in an accurate yet entertaining fashion. These stories serve to help old and young alike to connect with math processes by providing a historical perspective to their discovery or development. While Marvels of Math could be used with upper elementary students, I feel it is most appropriate for middle school to adult learners or interested mathematicians.
