Book Description

January 2003 4 and upP and up

Marvin is scared. It is the first day of school and everyone seems to know where to go -- except Marvin. Everyone seems to have a place in class -- except Marvin. And everyone seems to know how to read -- except Marvin.

Marvin's struggle with reading will ring true to reluctant and eager readers alike, and all will share his triumph in Katherine Paterson's reassuring story perfectly captured by Jane Clark Brown's illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In his latest adventure, Marvin arrives late on the first day of school and his teacher tells him there's no more room in Marvin One Too Many by Katherine Paterson, illus. by Jane Clark Brown. To make matters worse, he doesn't know how to read and his parents don't have time to help. Colored-pencil illustrations capture the boy's wide-ranging expressions.

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-Marvin, previously featured in Marvin's Best Christmas Present Ever (1997) and The Smallest Cow in the World (1991, both HarperCollins), is facing the first day of first grade in a new school. Things do not get off to a great start when his teacher tells him that he is "one too many" and there is no desk for him. To make things worse, Marvin is having difficulty learning to read. Afraid to ask his busy dairy-farming parents for help, the boy lashes out in frustration at the other students. As the days pass, he wishes for a snowstorm so that school will be cancelled, but when it happens he feels guilty. When his family finally discovers the problem, they reassure him that with their help, he'll be reading in no time. The story captures the sometimes-overwhelming challenges that school can present and beginning readers will relate to it. Marvin's emotions and responses are realistic: embarrassment, frustration, bottled-up feelings, and guilt. Students will recognize and smile at the way that adults enunciate every word when demonstrating how to "sound out" words like brown, "Brrrrr-OW-na." The softly colored illustrations express Marvin's emotions well and detail the indoor scenes and rural setting. Paterson has created a sympathetic character and a story that children will surely enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars great easy reader with a message, December 17, 2003
Marvin arrives late on the first day of school . When he gets to his classroom the teacher tells him that hes one too many. She wasnt prepared for an extra student. Marvin thought that she didnt like him. As the school year goes on he is having troble learning to read. He finally talks with his parents about his problem and they help him.

I like the book because it opens up discussions on embarrassment and frustration. Children who are learning to read can relate to Marvins feelings. The will learn that if they keep trying reading will become easier to them.

I would recommed this book to kids who are learning to read. Its a part of the I Can Read Books Series. They will feel proud for themselves when they are able to read it alone.
