Book Description

August 22, 2001 0567087514 978-0567087515 2
One of Britain's most distinguished theologians explains the basic beliefs held about Mary in the Christian church.Written with an ecumenical purpose, Professor Macquarrie shows that in Mary, Christians may find resources for unity and reconciliation, rather than conflict. Each chapter explores a different event associated with Mary, from her Immaculate Conception to her Assumption and also her relation to contemporary culture.A new edition of a key text for the ecumenical movement, this book includes a new introduction and takes account of the current Roman Catholic debates on the subject of 'Mary Corredemptrix'.

This review is from: Mary for All Christians (Paperback)
As a recent member of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I figured that this book was a must read but feared that it would tend to a "lowest common denominator" view of Mary. Nothing could be further from the truth. Macquarrie does not shy away from contraversy, but he also manages to show the Immaculate Conception and the Glorious Assumption in an entirely new light, convincing us that they are fully Christian mysteries with implications for the Church, all of humanity, and even the entire cosmos. The book ends with a beautiful Ecumenical Office of Mary the Mother of Jesus. HIGHLY recommended.
