3.0 out of 5 stars From the good old days
Back before Ann M. Martin (if such a person exists) totally sold out, she had a wicked sense of humor. This book shows it well, with my favorite scene in all the Baby-sitter's adventures: they hit the library seeking magic spells, and Mary Ann's mind swirls with thoughts of an old librarian beckoning them to a poorly-lit, cobwebbed corner of the library, where dusty,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Bah to superstition, October 3, 2011

Despite Mary Anne's sweet and shy personality, she has gained rivals because girls are jealous that she has a boyfriend (Logan) You know what they say, haters gonna hate. So they decide to screw around with Mary Anne by making her believe that she has been cursed with bad luck. In the end it proves to just be a prank, and the club learns to not take superstition so seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Anne's Bad-Luck Mystery, June 14, 2006
I really like all the BSC books, but this one is just a little bit better than the average ones.

Mary Anne gets a chain letter and tempts bad luck by throwing it away and breaking the chain. When bad things start to happen, the girls are a little freaked out - and then a bad luck charm arrives for Mary Anne. With it is a note, telling her that she has to wear it "or else!" Not wanting their luck to get worse, Mary Anne wears it. Will they figure things out before anything REALLY bad happens?

And as Halloween draws near, Jessi helps Jamie Newton become a little less afraid of costumes; Kristy has to deal with her younger siblings' fears about the spooky holiday. The best moment in the book - A bird has gotten into the Pike house and been shooed out a window. Claire Pike, noting that the bird came in via the chimney, asks "I wonder if the bird knows Santa Claus." Funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Anne has a good day until she finds a chain letter., February 18, 1999

This review is from: Mary Anne's Bad-Luck Mystery (Baby-Sitters Club) (Hardcover)
Mary Anne is walking home one day and checks her mailbox for mail and she finds a letter with her name on it,but it is right before the meeting.she decides toread it during the meeting. She says "I have a letter in my pocket." She opens it up and almost screams. "Oh , my gosh",she says,"it is a chain letter." After that she goes to school the next day and they start talking about the letter and starts thinking that there are signs of bad luck all over the place and before the Halloween Hop she recieves a box with a bad luck charm. She has to wear it because it says to wear it or else so she wears it. On the night before Halloween she gets a letter that says to be at the cemetery OR ELSE! She calls the rest if the club and talks about it with them. She talks for awhile with Kristy and realizes that Cokey is the person who did this and they do a really big trick and the book ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must read for Baby-Sitters Club lovers, January 9, 1998
By A Customer
This was a very good book for me to read and I couldn't keep my nose out of it! I think it was quite good and I think so because it builds up suspense and it keeps you reading. It is similar to Kristy's Worst Idea through the way it has humor, sadnesses, and joys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whoooooooo, December 28, 2001

One of Ann's sort of fantasy books. I like the spooky set ups. pretty funny when Mary Anne crys. Why would any bad people send Mary Anne a bad luck charm? read this book to find out

I'm not spoiling anything, but it must be a person who hates Mary Anne, or her friends. Would it be involved with Mary Anne's boyfriend, Logan? Or is the sender jealous about the way Mary Anne's acting. You MUST read this book

Back before Ann M. Martin (if such a person exists) totally sold out, she had a wicked sense of humor. This book shows it well, with my favorite scene in all the Baby-sitter's adventures: they hit the library seeking magic spells, and Mary Ann's mind swirls with thoughts of an old librarian beckoning them to a poorly-lit, cobwebbed corner of the library, where dusty, strange-smelling old books lurk, waiting for hapless teens to unwittingly unlock the dark secrets inside. Instead the books are shelved along with all the other books, in the bright Stoneybrook Library. It is a great moment. You should not miss it.
