She deserves the nickname "The Hurricane",

Seldom is there an artist that makes me stop in my tracks. Ms. Davies' voice explodes with a truth and passion seldom ever heard. Like a hurricane she obliterates anything coming before her and sets a new standard. Not only is she on pitch, but her delivery is perfect. She defines each song with such a command that it is almsot hard to imagine anyone else singing them but her. I'm not a huge blues fan, but this album is so much more then that, it transcends the genre into something much more accessible and immediate. In fact, I'd almost hesitate to call it a blues album, yes the orchestrations fall into that genre but her voice, -that voice!- has the heart of the most intense rocker, the soul of gospel singer, the passion of a jazz singer, and the sublime aesthetic of a soprano singing a Puccini aria. Her delivery of "Superstition" on this album obliterates Stevie Wonder's version, a task I thought impossible to do. "Black Cat Bone" leaves me stunned, no words to express the rawness and truth in her delivery. I very much look forward to hearing her future work. As for this album, it is one of the most thrilling I've run across in years. Truly a find and an investment worth making. My only complaint? I wish it were longer!!!

We first saw Ms. Davies playing Janis Joplin in the play "Love, Janis"--and I admit we had real reservations about whether anybody could do the singing portion of the role justice. Not to worry--she was fabulous! (We have since seen her perform with Big Brother, which was a treat.) Her CD is everything we'd expected, filled with an energized performance of much talent. Buy it--you'll love it, too. (Bonus: it's great workout or housework music, too--gives me the energy the task requires.)
