Mary Mary Christmas - Loved it!,
By Kay Kay "kaabee" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mary Mary Christmas (Audio CD)
I'm a HUGE Mary Mary fan and I was NOT disappointed by this CD. I enjoyed this CD from Track 1 to Track 11. It's a Christmas CD done in true Mary Mary style. The traditional songs still hold their traditional sound, but have a different vibe and I like that. During the holidays you hear so much of the same holiday songs, most of them sounding the same...that you appreciate when a musician comes along and makes a song their own. If you enjoy Christmas music, you'll like this CD.
As for the song "California Christmas," I think they were sharing their Christmas with us. Most Christmas songs are about snow and it being cold, well where they grew up/live, there wasn't any of that. I'm an East Coast girl and all I know is snow and cold, but this song opened my eyes to Christmas in Cali, sunny and warm. Christmas isn't about the weather and they are letting you know that no matter the weather, CHRISTMAS is CHRISTMAS!

Very Good Album but...,
By Applesauce McGee "T.V. Nut" (Barbados) - See all my reviews

As a fan of Mary Mary, I was quite excited to hear that the girls were dropping a Christmas album. Now historically Christmas albums don't do very well (people aren't interested in buying music they can only play for a month and a half and then put it up for fear of someone calling them whacko for playing Christmas music in March) but still i went out and got this album.
I would have to say it is very different, dare I say non-traditional. It starts off with a very Motown-esque "Tis the Season" which really gets the party started. "Only One" just makes you nod your head with its driving beat. They go back to the basics (but put their own spin) on the standards Merry Little Christmas (very nicely done), a very African "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Carol of the Bells". "The Real Thing" and "California Christmas" are not bad either. But my favorite track has to be "Still the Lamb". This is a song that stirs the emotions and calls you to worship especially in the last 2 minutes of the song. My ONLY problem with the album is that it is too short. At less than 40 minutes I didn't feel that I got value for my money. Overall 3 stars.

Seasonal albums are already limited in their scope,

With a name like theirs, maybe it is inevitable that they would add a Christmas album to their discography. Then again, only the top acts that can carry this off successfully so Mary Mary, spearheads in the ministry, certainly qualify on their credentials. They have wisely kept this one brief, under 40 minutes, perhaps in recognition of seasonal albums' limited air-time (and ear-time).
So Christmas albums rarely rise above the purpose of a backdrop to one's festivities but the odd track here may attract your attention. Choice cuts are `Carol Of The Bells', `Still The Lamb' and the 70's styled `Tis The Season'. `California Christmas' encourages us to go outside, though we in the UK will prefer to stay indoors and shake a leg to the remix. Seasonal albums are already limited in their scope. Cutting straight to the chase with more power tracks like `Still The Lamb' and the double time `Call Him Jesus' is what gospel practitioners are blessed to do. Dishing out token carols where the melody remains the same (`Merry Little Christmas', `O Come All Ye Faithful') and the schmaltzy `California Christmas' may be necessary but are a no-no for me - and such fare should be left to secular artists to churn out. Mary Mary Christmas fulfils its purpose but, because it misses the chance to portray a more defined message and perspective of the season, it has no killer punch. Gift-wrapped, but hardly a surprise.

Good Christmas Album,
This review is from: Mary Mary Christmas (Audio CD)
Gospel singing duo Mary Mary have voices like angels so a Christmas album seems natural for them right? Well A Mary Mary Christmas is a decent holiday album. As a fan of the group what I noticed different between this album and some of their studio albums is that the Christmas album is more laid back. It's a pretty mellow Christmas album. The album features a lot of soft, soothing, music so this album might be good for listening to in front of the fireplace after your holiday dinner.
One stand up energy pumping Christmas song on the album is "I Call Him Jesus." This is one of the stand out cuts on the album. It's a Christmas album and you can't really go wrong, it's just probably not one I would have in heavy rotation but I could see myself bringing it out again next season. Featured artists on the album include Dontae Wilson, Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer, and Damani. The album was produced by Warryn "Baby Dubb" Campbell and was released by Sony Urban Music.

I noticed alot of negative reviews for this album... I suggest you disregard them... This album is really good! Mary Mary did it again with their music. While preserving traditional Christmas songs, they added their own style. Some of my Favorites are, Carol of the Bells, Only One, Call Him Jesus, and California Christmas!

Yes, the album was too short, Yes, I personally think that they could have blessed us with more spiritual songs to reflect our LORD and KING, but all in all I STILL LIKED IT and PLAYED IT EVERYDAY. I especially like "ONLY ONE..could be Savior only one could be King" THAT WAS TRULY in Mary Mary Style! I love them NO MATTER WHAT, but I just hope they don't stray too far trying to reach the secular world that they forget that us TRUE CHRISTIANS want that MARY MARY from the FIRST THREE CDs. Even though CA Christmas wasn't your traditional spiritual christmas song, it was done in the spirit of fun and gave us a view of christmas without snow.

I get tired of listening to the same old Christmas songs year after year. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the few traditional songs that are on this CD have been Mary Maryized quite nicely.
This CD would also make a great stocking stuffer or grab bag gift for nonbelievers because it is upbeat and portrays the true meaning of Christmas. In a time when we are inundated with meaningless songs about snow, Santa and Christmas trees, it's nice to have something that we can give to our family members as a witness to what Christmas is all about. Christmas is just about the only time of year that many people are open to the message of Christ's birth. The message of the song "Still The Lamb" presents The Gospel quite nicely and would make a great way to subtly share it with those hard to reach family memebers. |
