Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-There have been many additions and revisions to this much-loved poem since Sarah Josepha Hale's 12-line "Mary's Lamb" was first published. Now, Trapani takes the lamb through a series of new slapstick adventures in 12 new verses. As the author sees it, the free-spirited animal is not the sort to wait around for Mary. Exploring a barnyard, it is first knocked down by a horse, then terrorized by a tough goose, before being drenched by a cow, butted into the air by a goat, and covered in muck when it lands in the pigpen. But farm girl Mary comes to the rescue, gently shampoos her lamb, feeds and kisses it, and tucks it into bed. The bright and lively watercolor illustrations are sweet; the animal starts out full of adventurous confidence, gradually changing through many variations of increasingly comic dismay, until finally it is snuggled all safe and sleepy into its bunk. The music appears at the end of the book, though to sing all of the verses would get monotonous. Read aloud rather than sung, the text works well for storytime; preschoolers will find it both humorous and reassuring.

More About the Author

In 1961, when I was seven years old, my mother and I came to America. My father, sister, brother and paternal grandmother all stayed behind in the tiny apartment in Warsaw, Poland where the six of us had lived. Under Communist rule entire families were prohibited from traveling abroad so my mother took me, the youngest, hoping to bring the rest of the family over soon thereafter. Tragically, she died before fulfilling her dream. My father died a few years later. Due to extenuating circumstances I was unable to return to Poland and twenty-seven years passed before I was reunited with my siblings. I spent three and a half years in a Catholic Children's Home and then, after completing High School, moved to the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York.
In the ensuing years I worked as a nanny, short-order cook and waitress while studying Art at the State University in New Paltz. After graduation I worked in various capacities - as a rock climbing guide, real estate broker, caterer and freelance illustrator. But all along I had one dream - a dream I held onto since I was a child - to make picture books. My portfolio bulged with art for children and I just hoped for that lucky break.
The break came one day in 1990 as I rode my mountain bike and a turtle crossed the trail in front of me. The serendipitous encounter inspired a poem which led to the publication of my first book, What Am I? An Animal Guessing Game.
My career blossomed with the release of The Itsy Bitsy Spider, an extension of the original rhyme, which is still going strong after an amazing nineteen years. Positive response from early educators encouraged me to retell and illustrate more nursery rhymes, and I am delighted that my books are used in schools nationwide and abroad.
I have always loved children's literature - from the wacky brilliance of Dr. Seuss to the timeless, love-filled classics of Margaret Wise Brown and a slew of others in between. The combination of engaging text and enchanting illustrations has always been an irresistible package, fascinating me all my life. As a child I spent hours immersed in the magical world of picture books. As an adult I try to re-create some of that magic for others to enjoy.
Looking back on my childhood in Poland, I feel that I owe my family gratitude for fostering a creative environment in our home and for instilling in me a love for books, language, art and music. For the brief time that I knew my parents their encouragement left a lasting impression and contributed greatly to the realization of my lifelong dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars A More Positive Take on Mary's Little Lamb, August 22, 2002

(REAL NAME)
Don't let the title of this book steer you away from buying it. This is not the sad little poem we remember from our childhood about the lamb following Mary and getting her into trouble.

In this version, Mary's little lamb decides to be independent and wander around the farm by himself. He does get into a bit of trouble, but at the end of the day, Mary is there to clean him up and tuck him into bed.

The poem is funny, cute, and catchy enough to get your toddler's attention, but the real reason to buy this book is the artwork. Every animal has a wonderful, comical expression on his or her face and there are lots of little details to notice. For instance, there are kitty cats in the background of most of the illustrations that my toddler likes to pick out.

The only thing I don't like about this book is that most of the animals - including the lamb - are referred to as "it" rather than "he" or "she." I don't think it's a good idea to refer to living things as "its" to a small child, so when I read this book I insert "he" and "she" where appropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Had a Little Lamb, May 30, 2009

This book is by Iza Trapani. Not much more need be said. Her books are wonderful and my granddaughters like them all! Teaching them the old children's song classics is fun and they ask to have them read over and over. I wonder if they realize the lessons they learn, animals introduced, kindnesses shown and the outstanding art in the pictures. Highly recommend for ages 2 to 6...My older granddaughter who is almost 9 still sneaks up to hear as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Instrumental Play-Along, July 30, 2011

This review is from: Mary Had a Little Lamb (Paperback)
I discovered this book when one of my piano students brought it in to her lesson. She was so enthusiastic about playing along with the storybook that I ordered several copies to share with my other students. Sheet music in the key of F Major is included at the front of the book. However, it is a simple 3-note melody that can be transposed to any key. Students can play the song in whatever key they learned it (e.g. 3 black keys on piano, or key of G on recorder). They are not reading the music anyway--just looking at the words and pictures. It is a delightful book, and I highly recommend it!
