More About the Author

Stacy Dittrich is an award-winning 18-year law enforcement officer, author, media consultant, and former detective specializing in sex crimes. With past training by a former FBI Behavioral Specialist, Stacy is certified through the National Institute of Truth Verification as an examiner (CVSA- lie detector). Stacy has also been assigned to a federal drug task force and has been involved in the investigations of numerous homicides. In 2002, she received the Victim's of Crime Award from former Ohio Attorney General, Jim Petro and is a certified law enforcement instructor and in 2009 was honored with a commendation by the Ohio House of Representatives for personal achievement. She has instructed on topics ranging from sexual assaults to "stranger dangers." Stacy retired early in 2008 to focus solely on her writing and media commitments. However, she is still a sworn special deputy with the Richland County Sheriff's Department in Mansfield, Ohio and is assigned to running the voice stress analysis tests for new hires and criminal suspects.
Growing up in a family stocked with police officers created a unique upbringing for Stacy. Her father and three uncles began their career as police officers in 1969 after they returned from Vietnam. She saw firsthand the dangers of the job in 1979 when her uncle, James, was shot in the line of duty. Although he survived, he ultimately had to go out on disability. However, the other three brothers remain officers now and have an incredible 120-years combined experience. Fascinated with law enforcement at an early age, Stacy frequently accompanied her father to work, and began investigating her own "crimes" at age 8, after reading the story of serial killer Ted Bundy. With a hand-me-down kit of fingerprint powder, microscope, and handcuffs, she scoured the neighborhoods in search of the ultimate crime scene, often performing crude autopsies on unsuspecting insects. By the time she graduated high school, Stacy had been on the scene of more "real" crimes than most police rookies, spending her weekends taking part in a ride-along program with her father. Stacy graduated the police academy as class president, at the top of her class. In 1997, the Mansfield News Journal did a 2-page feature story on Stacy and her father, "Like Father, Like Daughter: The Beat Goes On."
Stacy is the author of the CeeCee Gallagher thriller series about a female detective. She and her first novel in the series, "The Devil's Closet", were featured on CNN and Fox. Based on an actual case Stacy investigated, the novel debuted in October, 2008. The highly anticipated follow-up, "Mary Jane's Grave", debuts in May 2009. Stacy's first true-crime book, "Murder Behind the Badge: True Stories of Cops Who Kill", will debut in September, 2009 (Prometheus, Hardcover), and is already receiving rave reviews:

"As a crime victim myself who went on to become a felony prosecutor, police have been a constant in my life for many, many years. They are some of the most honorable people I have ever known. Dittrich exposes the dichotomy between police who fight crime every day vs. those who have become criminals themselves... a real mind-twister!"
--Nancy Grace, HLN Host of "Nancy Grace"

"Murder Behind the Badge reveals the dark underbelly of the cop-shop, the evil that can lurk within. Some of these cases you may have heard about, many you have not. Now, learn the inside details of how a murderer gets a badge and is sometimes protected by fellow officers. Only another cop could walk the public through how a psycho gets on a police force in the first place. Only another cop could explain how the mindset of the thin blue line is sometimes so similar to the mindset of the truly disturbed. Author Stacy Dittrich is that cop. This is the book. In the realm of true crime this is a must-have!"
--Diane Dimond, "Entertainment Tonight" Investigative Anchor/Journalist and Author of "Who You Love: Inside the Michael Jackson Case"

Stacy's memoir about her life as a female police officer, Stumbling Along the Beat, debuts in Spring 2010 (Kaplan):
"Humorous and shocking, Stacy Dittrich's account of life as a female police officer and growing up in a law enforcement family will undoubtedly grab your attention. A fascinating read!"
--Ray Liotta, award-winning actor and star of Goodfellas

I absolutely loved this book. She is one of the best writers that I have read in a long, long time. Her books rank up there with Kim Harrisons and Kathy Reichs. Can't wait for her next book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting police procedural, May 2, 2009
This review is from: Mary Jane's Grave (Mass Market Paperback)
In March 1898, four men killed her infant son, raped her and her daughter Madeline, and burned her as a witch. With her last breath, Mary Jane Hendrickson using her gift and cursed the men and the grounds where they committed their atrocities. The sexual assault of Madeline left her pregnant. In the present, the grave of Mary Jane was buried by a tree in the middle of an old cemetery where teens fool around scaring one another.

Sargent CeeCee Gallagher is called to the Mount Olive Cemetery because the murdered body of Keri Sutter was found on Mary Jane's grave. She had been separated from her friends who swore they saw an old woman and heard the scream of a baby crying though no infant was seen. CeeCee assumes one of the students killed Keri and used the Mary Jane witch tale to frighten the others. Elder Willie Morris suggests CeeCee look up the history . The detective does and learns that twenty years ago another teen was stoned to death on the grave-site; the culprit got away with murder. CeeCee continues investigating into Mary Jane's life and death tracking ancestry and descendants onto the present in order to prevent more homicides.

A CeeCee Gallagher police procedural is always a treat (see THE DEVIL'S CLOSET) as the sergeant gives her readers a deep look at how she runs an investigation and why she takes some of the key steps that she does. The audience also receives glimpses of her love affair with FBI Agent Michael Haggar while he deals with a treacherous former wife who will do anything to get him back. The who-done-it is terrific with its ties to the late nineteenth century atrocities as Stacy Dittrich provides a unique voice with a fresh brisk thriller starring a heroine who resonates with readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent thrill-ride and refreshingly multi-layered, May 20, 2009
This review is from: Mary Jane's Grave (Mass Market Paperback)
When Detective CeeCee Gallagher receives a call about a homicide at Mount Olive Cemetery, naturally she must ask about Mary Jane's Grave. Legend tells of witchcraft and her execution by hanging. Some residents think her spirit haunts the grave to this day. The location and the crime details of the young woman's murder bring an urgency to this case. The eyewitness accounts all speak of eerie phenomena, but CeeCee Gallagher doesn't believe in ghosts. She knows she must hunt for the real culprit behind this crime. Her investigation takes her deep into the hidden past of Mansfield, Ohio and a past no one seems to want uncovered. The past leads her on a journey across both time and space as she must look elsewhere to uncover all the links to past crimes committed near Mary Jane's grave. As all the pieces start falling into place, Detective CeeCee Gallagher is in a race against time with her very life at stake to solve the mystery and catch the killer in a case that might even find her believing in ghosts.

In MARY JANE'S GRAVE, the second CeeCee Gallagher thriller, Stacy Dittrich steps up her game considerably. Every element of plot, characterization, and crime detail work together to create an intelligent thrill-ride that keeps a reader glued to the pages. A refreshingly multi-layered detective and a complex, intriguing case to match create a gripping combination. CeeCee is a tough investigator with professional skills and a intuition that keeps her from ignoring the troubling details of the crimes. When others around her may not see all the links, she has the determination to consider all the connections. Her personal life is a mess with as many fascinating twists and turns as the murders she investigates. The cold case element adds richness and complexity and depth, not only to the crime itself but to CeeCee's personal life and choices. MARY JANE'S GRAVE joins elements of the supernatural with archival research to uncover secrets that send chills down the spine from the mind of the killer to the dynmics within a town's history that hide unspeakable crimes.

MARY JANE'S GRAVE can be read as a stand-alone. The author gives enough clues so that a reader captures glimpses of the detective's life without bogging down the story. The main difficulty with reading this as a stand-alone is that the identity of the killer in her debut book THE DEVIL'S CLOSET is revealed. I found MARY JANE'S GRAVE so compelling that I am now reading her first book so that I will know the character's past better before the third book is released in 2010 --a book release I eagerly await. Personally, it works for me reading the books in reverse order to see how much the author's writing style has truly grown but if knowing the identity in advance bothers you, you might want to start at the beginnning. In MARY JANE'S GRAVE, Stacy Dittrich just seems to have gone from the fascinating crime in her debut to truly finding a unique voice and presentation. MARY JANE'S GRAVE is a stunning work of suspense with a refreshingly original look into a horrific crime. If you love engaging suspense, Stacy Dittrich is definitely an amazing new talent in the genre!
