Book Description

April 4, 2000
Celebrated gymnast Mary Lou Retton shares the inspiring philosophies behind her success--and offers seven practical gateways to finding true happiness in your own life.

Who can forget Mary Lou Retton's perfect vault and winning smile? Fifteen years after her Olympic triumph, Mary Lou is no longer the little girl on the Wheaties box--she's a dynamic, accomplished mother of two who has become one of America's most sought-after motivational speakers and inspiration to people everywhere. Now, in Mary Lou Retton's Gateways to Happiness, she shares her secrets for achieving a balanced, fulfilling career and life and presents seven gateways that can help you cultivate lasting happiness every day.

Based on her remarkable experiences as an Olympic athlete, professional speaker and spokesperson, Christian, wife, and mother, Mary Lou Retton's Gateways to Happiness shows that, even with life's challenges and obstacles, true happiness is always within our reach. The seven gateways she presents--Family, Faith, Relationships, Attitude, Discipline, Health, and Laughter--are the tools we can use to improve our sense of contentment and well-being, as we follow our true dreams and ambitions, take care of our bodies, devote more time to the special people in our lives, and make our relationship with God an integral part of every day. For each gateway, Mary Lou provides concrete suggestions, action plans, and even recipes to help you embrace its principles and make it work for you. From communication exercises, to time management, to spiritual disciplines, Mary Lou's warm hearted prescriptions and advice will help you discover your deepest needs, reduce stress, and open the door to a life filled with peace and joy.

Flavored with inspiring stories from renowned athletes and celebrities, and brimming with the trademark enthusiasm and energy that have made her such a beloved American figure, Mary Lou Retton's Gateways to Happiness is a fresh and engaging collection of wisdom that will enable you to realize your true, God-given potential. The next time you look in the mirror that winning smile will belong to you!

From Mary Lou Retton's introduction. On August 3, 1984, I stopped being just Mary Lou Retton from Fairmont, West Virginia, and discovered that overnight I'd become "America's Sweetheart." Without the unfaltering support of my family, and without the strength I received from my faith in the Lord, I never would have made it through this difficult period. They helped me understand that this overwhelming transformation in my life was not something to run away from, but rather to be embraced. I came to realize that it was just one part of the larger journey I was on--what Dr. Billy Graham calls our "journey toward happiness."

Even with all my preparation and training for success in the Olympics, I was never aware that I was also preparing for something else. Something which would last for the rest of my life, long after I was able to mount a balance beam or stick a perfect landing. I was training for happiness.

True joy and happiness are within reach for all of us no matter how bad our circumstances may seem, I believe that our happiness depends on how we respond to certain basic opportunities, or gateways, that God has opened to each and every one of us--Family, Faith, Relationships, Attitude, Discipline, Health, and Laughter--gateways that will take us one step further down the road to true happiness.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Gymnast Retton, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, is now a marketing spokesperson and motivational speaker, wife and mother of two young daughters. Aiming to convey her energetic charm on the page, she shares her philosophy together with glimpses of her life and career, focusing especially on her great moment. Unfortunately, her artlessly written book fails to deliver much substance or excitement, leaving the promise of the subtitle unfulfilled. Despite her relentlessly upbeat attitude and deep religious faith, Retton tends to come off as preachy, smug (she always gives 110%) and lacking in depth--as when she blithely advises readers to find positivity in every life experience, including the death of a loved one. An impressively disciplined individual, who at 14 left her West Virginia family to train with world-famous coach Bela Karolyi in Houston, Retton earnestly believes in and urges on the kind of hard work, perseverance and determination that brought her fame. She also stresses the importance of friendship, teamwork, attitude, healthy habits and laughter. To fill out the health chapter, she offers a nutritional plan (including a plug for Lipton tea, for which she is a spokesperson). Though she doesn't urge her religious beliefs on her readers, the book will likely appeal to fans of Billy Graham and to the Christian market. Those looking for more secular or substantial self-help will find that this book misses the mark. Agent, Al Lowman. 12-city author tour. (Apr.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Message, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
Although I was a fan of Mary Lou's when she was competing in the Olympics, I hadn't given her much thought in years. I heard a radio interview she gave and decided to get her book. It is wonderful! As an avid reader of self-improvement books, I can say this is one of the most inspiring I've read in a while. It is practical and down-to-earth. An though I know some may criticize it because Mary Lou is a celebrity and has money, we are all still the same basic cells and makeup. Money does not buy it all, including and especially happiness. Kudos to Mary Lou! Well written and inspiring!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great role model for young and old alike, April 6, 2000
By A Customer
I saw Mary Lou on Later Today and bought her book after seeing what a genuine positive role model she is. She asks some good questions -- why aren't we happy when most of us have anything we could ask for? Why don't we want to work hard to be happy? She also tells really personal stories about the hard times she has gone through herself and how she saw the positive in every situation. If this book will help me have her energy, smile, and happy outlook, then I can't wait to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Lou's book a "10", April 9, 2000
I just got my copy of the book today. I did read it and it is a "10" as Mary Lou would put it. They were some intersting points she made and some fasinating stories that I never knew about with her own family and her past. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it.
