4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Message
Although I was a fan of Mary Lou's when she was competing in the Olympics, I hadn't given her much thought in years. I heard a radio interview she gave and decided to get her book. It is wonderful! As an avid reader of self-improvement books, I can say this is one of the most inspiring I've read in a while. It is practical and down-to-earth. An though I know some...

3.0 out of 5 stars successful people are usually happy
Mary Lou Retton certainly speaks from experience as an American success story. She's worked hard and is a beautiful person and certainly deserves her happiness. Who in her position wouldn't be happy? Of course she has everything anyone could ask for. And in those statements lies the cautionary tale for the rest of us. Most people must find their happiness with a great...

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Message, April 20, 2000

This review is from: Mary Lou Retton's Gateways to Happiness: 7 Ways to a More Peaceful, More Prosperous, More Satisfying Life (Hardcover)
An though I know some may criticize it because Mary Lou is a celebrity and has money, we are all still the same basic cells and makeup. Money does not buy it all, including and especially happiness. Kudos to Mary Lou! Well written and inspiring!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great role model for young and old alike, April 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mary Lou Retton's Gateways to Happiness: 7 Ways to a More Peaceful, More Prosperous, More Satisfying Life (Hardcover)
I saw Mary Lou on Later Today and bought her book after seeing what a genuine positive role model she is. She asks some good questions -- why aren't we happy when most of us have anything we could ask for? Why don't we want to work hard to be happy? She also tells really personal stories about the hard times she has gone through herself and how she saw the positive in every situation. If this book will help me have her energy, smile, and happy outlook, then I can't wait to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Lou's book a "10", April 9, 2000
This review is from: Mary Lou Retton's Gateways to Happiness: 7 Ways to a More Peaceful, More Prosperous, More Satisfying Life (Hardcover)
I just got my copy of the book today. I did read it and it is a "10" as Mary Lou would put it. They were some intersting points she made and some fasinating stories that I never knew about with her own family and her past. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it.

Is she for real? Is she really that happy? What's up with that ever present toothy smile of hers? If you read this book and apply the sensible principles and fundamentals found within you too will know the same joie d'vivre that's a trademark of this effervescent munchkin. YES she really is that happy! She works at it and so can you. A great read and a sure formula for a meaningful and happy life awaits within.

Of course she has everything anyone could ask for. And in those statements lies the cautionary tale for the rest of us. Most people must find their happiness with a great deal less than Mary Lou Retton has achieved and acquired. I wonder... if a book like this had been written by a non-celebrity, who would be reading it? Its message is simple, which is certainly a good thing. But in the lives of those for whom this "formula" isn't quite so simple and doesn't work quite so neatly, who is presenting a workable message for them?
