Book Description

November 1, 2010
From Where I Stand is photographer Mary McCartney’s first book, introducing the very best work spanning her career from the mid-1990s to the present. These images are a reflection not only of Mary’s personal world, but also of the unique relationships she establishes with the people she photographs. She constantly seeks to put her subjects at ease, watching and waiting for them to let the camera in rather than imposing any formal ideas of composition or technique. The book is centered around an outstanding collection of portraits, from 50s-inspired rockabillies to Paul and Linda McCartney, Madonna, Bono, Debbie Harry, Elvis Costello, Dennis Hopper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Moss. Here are amazing people, places, and events as seen through Mary’s eyes: the intimacy of backstage preparations among the corps de ballet at the Royal Opera House; the raw energy of fashion shows and rock concerts, both on stage and off; the private spaces of home and family; and wittily observed vignettes of visual delight.

3.0 out of 5 stars People and Photos December 21, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Mary McCartney has made a book of some interesting photos. It is true that she probably at first gains the chance to make some of these photographs because she is the daughter of Paul McCartney; but she does have an eye for photography. There are good-looking pictures, not really extraordinary, except in the ability she has to photograph some of people and events, dressed and undressed and at places such as in back stage areas and fashion shows.
There are some introductions in the beginning from herself, her husband and father.
The pictures are labeled with where and when they were taken. Most are in black and white, not arranged in chronological or by subject; but they are pleasant pictures to look at, likable in their composition and for those that are fans or will become devotees of Mary McCartney's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars great pictures, shame about the chinese quality January 6, 2011

I'll keep this quick.

The book is great, the pictures are captivating and will make a coffee table proud.

The printing (done in china) is shocking, the ink has bled on some of the pages, and on a double page spread the pages had stuck together, presumably due to the ink and there are ink streaks on both pages in the same place.

I won't return it because I don't want to deal with the hassle and its not bad enough to make me not enjoy it. Don't let this scare you away from buying it but just be aware that it could happen with your copy too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Photos May 29, 2012
Format:Hardcover
In my opinion, the best photos in this book are the pictures of the McCartney family at ease and relaxed. I especially like the two pictures of a relaxing James, the photo of Paul painting and with a baby, and the picture of a pregnant Stella in a field of flowers. The picture of Linda's empty side of the bed is very poignant.

Mary also has a great eye for taking pictures of children. The photo of the little boy in cowboy attire playing the piano is particularly nice.

The best picture not associated with the McCartneys is of the ballerina backstage laughing her ass off while half naked. They seem so comfortable in the presence of the camera, and that is the mark of a good photographer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shared Vision June 2, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Mary McCartney clearly has an excellent eye. Like her mother, Linda, Mary has a flair for capturing people at just the right moment, thus preserving them up close and personal. While I enjoyed Linda McCartney's books, I really enjoyed Mary's collection.

Mary has her own style and is clearly a connoisseur of things artistic, such as ballet. She has a long-established background in photo work and she has clearly taken what she has observed and shared a vision with the world.

To make a good thing even better, each photograph is labeled so readers know who is in the photographs and when and where they were taken.

Readers will undoubtedly enjoy the introductions by Mary, her husband and her father, Paul McCartney. More importantly, they will enjoy hearing Mary in her own "voice," so to speak and to share her vision through this collection.

In fairness, Mary has worked hard to get where she is now. Regardless of who she is related to, her work is excellent and she expresses herself quite well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marys pic's McCartney November 7, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
OK on there own the photographs are great and Mary has a great eye. I've always loved her mom's work and I have all her books. But this work of Mary's show's a young lady stepping out on her own and what a first step. Yes she has been around for awhile like her study of the Royal Ballet but this is a great book of work you can hold and enjoy of people you know. Buy it..

1.0 out of 5 stars What is a good photo? May 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I know photography is subjective but sometimes all I can think of is that old story about no one being honest enough to tell the king he wasn't wearing any clothes. I found this book - these photos - to be mostly boring and substandard. Do I honestly believe her work is published in respected magazines because she is 'that good' -- or because of her last name? I hate that she has to deal with that tired cliche but if you put her work up against dynamic photographs by others: ones that make you catch your breath - she doesn't come off as having any special 'eye' or vision. It's particularly wince producing because she's been allowed access to people and scenes others haven't, yet she's easily surpassed by those who seem to have a better understanding of what deserves their focus.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it December 28, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As I got to know Linda McCartney's work, together with her story, I grew thirsty for more and got a lot of books about her. On one of my searches, I ran into this book. I found it very interesting that Mary had given a chance to photography and published a book exposing the view "from where she stands". Her work has just a few similarities to her mum's, however I loved her work too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary McCartney: From Where I Stand Book November 26, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book on Amazon for less than I could find it anywhere else. I think it's pretty cool that Mary McCartney published a photography book like her mother, Linda McCartney, did several times througout her life time. This is a good photography book with several pictures like whather mother would take. Not too many of her family, but I guess seeing a lot of her family doesn't really show her talent.
