Book Description

7 and up
From the creator of the best-selling Polk Street School series--and winner of the Newbery Honor--comes The Adventures of Minnie and Max, a new series of chapter books about a plucky female detective and her trusty feline sidekick, Max. Minnie's brother, Orlando --owner of the Catfish Cafe--may not be sure of Minnie's detective work, but her new friend Cash and police officer Kitty the Klutz, are right behind her, helping her all the way. Minnie and Cash join forces for an important case--a stolen racing pigeon, a prizewinner named Mary Moon, and the very suspicious disappearance of their friend, Bird Berry.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-"You Lose, I Find" is the name of the detective business that Minnie and her cat Max operate. They are always on the trail of a mystery to be solved and this one zeroes in on a stolen prize pigeon. The girl enlists the help of her friend Cash to find Mary Moon before the upcoming Pigeon Prize Race. An Atlantic coastal community serves as the setting for this story, with the sleuth's headquarters located in her brother's Catfish Cafe. Red herrings abound as Minnie, Max, and Cash take steps and missteps to solve the case. The plot in this beginning chapter book will hold readers' attention to the end. It is fun to follow and to try to figure out how the diverse characters fit together. Lively, pen-and-ink drawings add to the enjoyment. Fans of David Adler's Cam Jansen and Mary Monsell's Mr. Pin will want to add Minnie and Max to their roster of mystery series characters to seek out.

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-5. Minnie isn't crazy about pigeons, but she likes to investigate mysteries with her best friend, Cash, and her rather unusual cat, Max. So when a prize racing pigeon, Mary Moon, disappears, something sure to affect the outcome of the community's annual pigeon race, Minnie and her friends are on the case. The clipped style takes a bit of getting used to, and it's not always easy to follow the kids' investigative leaps of logic. But the situation is fresh, and the supporting characters are always interesting. Giff has done a good job of mixing a bit of comedy in with the suspense, and sure enough, Minnie comes through it all, having found a new animal friend. Stephanie Zvirin
