5.0 out of 5 stars Read to Your Child to Develop Bonding and Intellect!, August 22, 2000

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Walt Disney's Mary Poppins was one of her picks.

This is the familiar endearing story of Mary Poppins, the most wonderful nanny ever. The story is abbreviated to make one good bedtime story, and contains drawings based on the popular Walt Disney movie featuring Julie Andrews. The book will develop interest in the movie and vice versa.

Jane and Michael are cared for primarily by their nanny. Mary Poppins introduces them to all kinds of magical fun. She can clean up the room by snapping her fingers. She has furniture inside of her carpet bag. She is able to to take the children into pictures that Bert, the jack-of-all-trades, draws with chalk on the sidewalk. There they have wonderful adventures. They even go riding on carousel horses in a fox hunt and then in a race. They also get to meet Uncle Albert, and laugh their way to the top of the room. Later, they dance on the chimney tops with Bert and the other chimney sweeps.

Their father, Mr. Banks is a little aloof -- perhaps because he works in a bank. When the children are with him, he encourages them to use their money to open a savings account rather than to buy pigeon food. Through the intervention of Mary Poppins, Mr. Banks and the children learn to have fun together. Then, it is time for Mary Poppins to be on her way. So she rides off on her umbrella.

The book provides great modeling for how to have fun with children while being a responsible adult. You are encouraged to play with children, and to help them exercise their imaginations as this wonderful book does. I know that in many situations, it was standard fare in our family to ask, "Now, what would Mary Poppins do?"

Overcome your stalled thinking that life must always be serious. Fantasy can help bring life to life!

Super-cali-fragil-istic!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not all that good, August 8, 2002
This review is from: Mary Poppins (Hardcover)
This book is a huge disappointment-it leaves out 80%of the movie, and the pictures are only so-so.I don't recommend this boring book to anyone who's a die-hard Poppins fan.All kids will do is look at the pictures to cure boredom, then toss the book aside and forget about it.
