5.0 out of 5 stars The Supremes Final Album IS A Soul/Funk Classic, November 10, 2008
This review is from: Mary, Scherrie & Susaye (Vinyl)
The Supremes left us with a legacy of historic firsts. Certainly, this final album by Mary Wilson, Scherrie Payne & Susaye Greene has been overlooked with all the achievements by The Supremes, but it is a true classic among Supremes & in-the-know music fans. It is filled with some VERY funky songs that still sound fresh some 30 + years after it's late 1976 release. The fiery vocals of Scherrie Payne are one reason why this music just cooks! Scherrie lights up a fire with her Shirley Bassey meets James Brown vocals. From the opener of the truly riveting & dynamic YOU'RE MY DRIVING WHEEL, [ a mix of soul, funk, rock & dance on this pulsating number that is unrelenting in it's force ], this is one of The Supremes best & most cohesive albums! The song is further punctuated with horns , and never stops rocking. It was their last Top 100 single, and should have been huge. The whole album is more progressive in sound, with many songs & production by Brian & Eddie Holland. They did for The Supremes in the late 70's what Norman Whitfield did for The Temptations - make them more soulful with a rock / funk edge on the songs they did for them on the final 3 albums by The Supremes [ THE SUPREMES, HIGH ENERGY and MARY SCHERRIE & SUSAYE ]. Just the fact that The Supremes were working with The Hollands again was big news, but corporate Motown had plans for other things, and not The Supremes. This album is filled with FANTASTIC songs, dynamic performances & timeless music. The trio's singing is fuller & more vibrant as a GROUP than any other edition of The Supremes. A more cohesive sound is here, with maybe an influence of the other important female groups of the time - Labelle & The Pointer Sisters.

Enough can not be said for the talents & the energy of Scherrie Payne as the lead singer of The Supremes. With her strong voice, these songs just resonate power. LET YOURSELF GO & I DON'T WANNA BE TIED DOWN are more rockin' dance songs with her amazing voice & super supportive singing by Mary & Susaye. SWEET DREAM MACHINE, the second song, is a sexy mid-tempo song that is easily the most adult song the group ever did. COME INTO MY LIFE is in that vein, but even more funky, with a lead vocal by Susaye , and hypnotic percussion & vocal backgrounds. This is like the progressive soul/rock sound of The Supremes!

There are also 2 beautiful ballads that Mary sings lead on - WE COULD BE CLOSER TOGETHER and the truly exquisite YOU ARE THE HEART OF ME - the b-side of the very last Supremes single , LET YOURSELF GO. To end this amazing album is arguably, one of the finest recordings the group ever did - LOVE I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD FEEL SO GOOD. This song is Philadelphia International meets Motown to perfection. It is a dance song that starts off with a full one minute orchestration with a pulsating beat, The Supremes cohesive oohs, and then Scherrie's dynamite lead vocal coming in. It's a 6 minute dance raver that does not let up. The fact that this album was not promoted by Motown just illustrates they did not care how great The Supremes still were. This final album has it all. All 3 Supremes share lead vocals, they have stellar songs, legendary producers Brian & Eddie Holland, and a contemporary sound. And Motown did not care. The Supremes left us at the top musically with this album. It's time that Hip-O-Select release the classic last 3 albums by The Supremes with MARY WILSON, SCHERRIE PAYNE, CINDY BIRDSONG, and SUSAYE GREENE [ who replaced Cindy for this final album & also on some of the songs on HIGH ENERGY ]. Don't be left out in the know. The Supremes final album IS a phenomenal album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Scherrie, Susaye: Sparking on all cylinders, December 20, 2009
This review is from: Mary, Scherrie & Susaye (Vinyl)
This Album is the continuation of a spark that was set when Mary & Scherrie added Susaye Greene to their lineup. With Susaye in the mix another vocal dimension was added to their talent. The songs here seem more superior than on "High Energy" which was a great album, but here they stepped it up a notch, with no help from Motown in helping to promote this. The songs speak for themselves disco, ballads, pop inflections etc, etc,. Susaye 5 octave on "Sweet Dream Machine" said it all
Another important factor is that all three girls contributed to their vocal ability on this album as well as the previous H.I.. The photo cover of the album is one of the best looking photos the group have ever taken along with WDOLG, & Right On.

One factor however cannot be ignored is the fact that their management headed by Pedro Ferrer was a thorn in everybody's side including Motown bandmates Schrrie, Susaye & especially the departed Cindy Birdsong who held up the Supremes for over 8 years, and although she is not present vocally on this album (which is one of their best efforts) Cindy was certainly thought of when I purchased this album, but I wonder if she could have fit this high energy approach they took with Scherrie and Susaye's high powered vocal style, although she was well represented vocally on "The Supremes" (75) and maybe she could have jelled but we'll never know since she was driven out of the group by Ferrer. Mary was able to fit in with all her experience and was able to move, and do ballads well which continued with this final Supremes package MSS, lets release this album along with the other late 70's Supremes albums and add in Partners and Mary's solo outing we Supremes fans are ready to buy since Motown won't release DVD performances that should have been released years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supreme Soul, December 7, 2009
This review is from: Mary, Scherrie & Susaye (Vinyl)
"gassy goon" says it all. This is The Supremes at their best. I am eagerly awaiting the release of The Supremes' last 3 albums on DVD along with Mary's solo Motown album and "Partners" written and performed by Scherrie and Susaye. I emailed Motown/Universal earlier this year and was assured the project was in progress and would be released by the end of this year. Nothing so far!
