Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-This interesting biography focuses on a woman who successfully defined the role of First Lady during one of the most difficult periods of United States history. Readers learn that Lincoln came from a privileged, prominent family, yet she and the backwoods lawyer fell in love and were bound by their mutual interest in politics. Though her background led her to focus on redecorating the White House and entertaining, she also visited hospitalized Union soldiers, reviewed troops with and consoled her husband, and did her part to help the Union cause. She endured the deaths of three sons, witnessed her husband's assassination, faced financial problems, suffered poor health, and found her way out of a mental asylum. The format features widely spaced lines of text for quick reading. Many black-and-white photographs and reproductions are included. Perfect for reports on women, First Ladies, and the Civil War era.-Jean Gaffney, Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library, OH
