Book Description

January 2003
When Sally Hamington - the toughest English teacher at a prestigious girls' academy - is accused of paedophilia, the entire school is turned upside down. New principal Helen Blalock, Dean of Students Sister Rose James and rival English teacher Angela Martin all have something to hide: Angela is a lesbian; Sister Rose has a fetish for Internet bondage sites; and Helen is a nymphomaniac. With dark humour and an offbeat, risque subject matter, Maryfield Academy offers seductive, surprising prose in the comedic vein of such authors as Muriel Spark, Fay Weldon and Mavis Gallant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather cheesy, October 31, 2003
This review is from: Maryfield Academy (Hardcover)
The idea behind this book was good. However, the author does very little to develop the plotlines. In so many cases, she throws the idea out there and then leaves it. Angela is said to be a lesbian, but that never affects her or her life. The nun is a Net-porn fan, but that issue never comes into play.
A decent read if you all you want is an escapist book. Otherwise, leave it on the shelf

1.0 out of 5 stars Just weird, March 28, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maryfield Academy (Paperback)
I bought this book because I thought it would be interesting. It wasn't. It's told from at least 5 different point of views including students and teachers. Basically the story is about a poem written on the bathroom wall of an all-girl school about the most strict teacher in the school. It's your typical "there once from a man from..." but the teacher took it seriously (as they should I suppose) So everyone hates this particular teacher and would love for her to have her reputation destroyed by this and everyone thinks one teacher in particular, one that would get the others promotion, is behind it.

It kind of drags along with another poem, media everywhere, the teacher being tied up and threatened with a gun and other hard to believe things, all over some poems. Not to mention one aspect of the story is by a nun addicted to sex chat rooms. Now I'm not saying it's healthy or anything, but it was grossly dramatized. I more saw a lonely woman visiting chat rooms every night. We don't even know what she says in the chat rooms either, so it's hard to say if she's some closet sex-addict or just curious. I was disappointed with the ending because it didn't seem realistic and almost seemed like the author was blowing things out of proportion because we are talking about a high school and not a middle school and girls will talk about sex. Don't buy this book. If you want to read it, try and find it at the library.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a great read..., March 27, 2007
This review is from: Maryfield Academy (Hardcover)
I agree with the previous reviewer. I really wanted to like this book, but the writing style was really quite juvenile. The details semed like they were added as an afterthought. An example of the sound (not taken from the book) "The crumpled paper scraped against her hand as she set down her Starbuck's coffee on the stained oak table, next to the glittering fishbowl that contained a solitary orange fish." WOW! I wish I had the book on hand so I could write some of them in here! I actually underlined a bunch!
