This book is an enjoyable experience to read. A big fan of amusement parks and a Maryland resident, I never knew of these early parks or how amusement parks themselves came to be. This book gave me a new appreciation for thrill rides, and a historical context that helps me understand Maryland. Who would have thought a history lesson would come from such a great little book?

I grew up about 3 or 4 blocks away from Gwynn Oak Park and I really wanted to see what they had to say about it. Pictures brought back memories, but there was not enough history written about it. For instance, my parents were married in 1935 and had met at the Dixie Ballroom--when was it built and why? My grandparents moved to Gwynn Oak Avenue with my grandfather's parents--I believe boats were there at the time and it might have been just a strolling park that seemed nice to move next door to. My uncle used to work there in the 40s, but not a lot about that time period. Oh well.

For whatever reason I've always been fascinated with older amusement parks. To that end I was pleasantly surprised to find this book, and really like how its devoted strictly to Maryland parks. A picture tells a thousand words and this book has lots of nice photos. I was most interested in Bay Shore Park (where some of the ruins still exist), Gwynn Oak (which I visited as a child) and Enchanted Forest (also a childhood favorite). This book had them all and many more. The history of the parks is nicely detailed and lots of great facts about the parks popularity and sadly decline is included. All in all a great book !
