A Breathless Compelation of one of America's best,
By Bob Richards (London England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mas Y Mas: The Los Lobos Box (Audio CD)
Like the Grateful Dead, Los Lobos is a selected taste with an auidence to match. Clearly thier musical depth is what keeps them intersting and entertaining. The combination of traditonal Mexican/Chicano endeavours and farily straight forward rock and roll/rythymn blues may leave some wondering what in the world they are trying to communicate. This is clearly a group of people with tremendous cultural pride that have learned the songs of their fathers with such precision and competency that this itself would stand as a work alone. Just have a listen to Del Este DeLos Angeles to understand this. Taken as a straight rock and roll band Los Lobos delivers a body of work that leaves the listener wanting more. This 4 CD compelation is stunning and should be in the collection of any serious listenter of "adult rock and roll". Long live the wolf.

A great collection from a great band!!,
By The Lord of Eltingville "kizmiaz" (Stoneham, MA) - See all my reviews

If this collection doesn't get your feet moving, check your pulse! There's plenty on this four disk retrospective for every Los Lobos fan, from their touching, acoustic Mexican ballads, to the driving rock and roll that they've been blowing the roofs off bars, clubs, and theaters with for years. It's so rare to find a band that doesn't have a weak link. Every member is an outstanding musician in his own right, and this collection admirably showcases their many talents. I've had the pleasure of seeing Los Lobos a number of times since ~1984, and they just keep getting better. If you hear that they're going to be playing in your area, don't miss the chance to see one of America's greatest bands. You won't be disappointed!

Los Lobos An American Treasure,

This review is from: Mas Y Mas: The Los Lobos Box (Audio CD)
There are two rock groups who through their musical excursions set the standard when it comes to exploring Americana. The Band was the first and it appears that Los Lobos has inherited and expanded on that journey along with a strong dose of latin flavor added to the mix. They share the same multi-instrumental abilities of The Band, utilizing an eclectic selection of material that takes them far from their East Los Angeles roots. As the foremost purveyors of chicano influenced rock, Los Lobos pays honor to not only their Mexican heritage but to all the other musical styles they were exposed to growing up in the neighborhoods of L.A. This box set wonderfully reveals the full extant of their relationship with various genres encompassing the blues, country & western, mexican folk (rancheras, norteno, cumbias, etc.)R&B,Rock AND Roll, jazz, and soul music. Los Lobos are an American treasure and this collection is a reflection of that.In fact this box is treasure chest unto itself. America's premier roots rockers. Five Stars Plus. Own It!!

Los Lobos-El Cancionero,
By
This review is from: Mas Y Mas: The Los Lobos Box (Audio CD)
Los Lobos is, by far, one of the most talented bands on the planet; and this box set is evidence. I cannot wait for the next collection as they have recorded so much more since the release of this.
El Cancionero tracks the band from its early East L.A. stages playing , essentially mexican/american folk music flavored with a little all-american rock-a-billy. The set then demonstrates the bands eclectic talents in rock, soul, country, and of course, muchos rancheras, corridos, cumbias, as well as the band's ventures into mariachi style music as documented on its critically-acclaimed release La Pistola y El Corazon. The set comes complete with a full-color booklet documenting LL's history as well as track by track notes from Louis Perez. A definite must for any Los Lobos fan.

Far from....,
By Travis Dubya McGee Bickle "elitist duffer" (Texas Quail Hunting Camp) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mas Y Mas: The Los Lobos Box (Audio CD)
....just another band...this gracious and generous box not only covers the rocking, fertile ground plowed by the "Just Another Band from East L.A." double, but also includes hearty samplings from their more modern, experimental, avant-garde-y era...I'm more of a fan of the earlier, more rootsy stuff, like "I got loaded" and "How will the wolf survive", but still, the latter era has its moments, like the gorgeous and seductive, "Kiko"...so, it's all here...
Combine that with great extras and covers like "What's Going On" and "Tomorrow Never Knows", and it adds up to a first-rate collection and a must for the roots rock fan.

Last weekend, I loaded these four CDs into my car's deck and drove from DC to New York. The drive was an absolute joy. This set is a continuing series of wonderful surprises. If you haven't really listened to these guys before (I hadn't), buy this and be prepared to smile a lot.

A blazing paradigm of a collection...,
By Mazzy (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mas Y Mas: The Los Lobos Box (Audio CD)
Since its early Winter release, this has been on my turntable, I mean CD player more than anything else. An amazing collection that shows the vastness of the Los Lobos legacy. Their beautiful Spanish tunes along with wonderfully written intricut Rock Music. Their own style is added to cover tunes and their splinter groups push the envelope even further. Just saw them live at the Fillmore in San Francisco and they have become a mixture of all the great live dance bands bringing their hight sprited originallity to American Music. Buy this collection now!

Good collection, but not what I've been waiting for,
By Mark Hazell (Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada) - See all my reviews

It's hard to find fault with this four disc collection -- selections from all of the band's albums to date are featured, along with a wonderful array of live performances, out takes, and side projects. For anyone not familiar with Los Lobos, I can think of no better way to make their acquaintance. Having seen them play many times over the last fifteen years, however, I keep hoping for a four(hundred) disc set of live performances. For my money, they are the band that should be releasing a series of "Dick's Picks" albums -- I know I'd buy them.

Fantastic Box Set,
By Gilbert Mees (Belgium, Europe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mas Y Mas: The Los Lobos Box (Audio CD)
I'll make this short and sweet, because this box set (CD4, track 12) is playing and the music is just too good to pass by and waste my time writing stuff... I only knew these guys from the "La Bamba" movie and took the dive into unknown territory. It was certainly worthwile, this is one of the most rewarding box sets out there, this band is so creative, passionate, original, daring, captivating. To tell the truth, I never thought I'd hear a band in the nineties that could make me change my mind that all good music stopped by the end of the 70's. If I ever get a chance in seeing them live in Belgium, I'm there. Wow!
