Born in the small town of San Giovanni Valdarno in 1401, Masaccio was receiving commissions from the churches of Florence and Pisa by the time he was twenty-one. In his short life, he established himself as one of the masters of the early Italian Renaissance. In this film, Lawrence Gowing tells the story of Masaccio's life, from its simple, striking beginnings to the great frescoes of Santa Maria Novella and the Brancacci Chapel in Florence.
