Format: Audio CD
'Mascharada' by the group 'The King's Noyse', directed by David Douglass is a very easy listen from what may be a somewhat neglected corner of European music, the late Renaissance, before the blossoming of the Baroque and Classical periods.

The source / venue of the music is attributed to the Buckeburg Court of Ernest III. Unfortunately, there are virtually no notes to help us know where in the world this court can be found. I strongly suspect it was somewhere in that great stew of western Germany, outside the larger courts of Bavaria and Brandenburg. All the music is written by composers with English or German names such as William Brade, Thomas Simpson and Nicholas Bleyer.

A mascharade seems to be a French word for Masque Dance. And, most of the music certainly sounds like dances performed while the 30 years war raged about them.

The absence of notes also leaves to my ear the question of whether the orchestra is using modern or period instruments. My guess, based on Bach and Mozart performances with period instruments is that this group is using 16th century hardware.

Get this if you like old music. Otherwise, buy another Mozart recording.
