Though known primarily for his fame as the Zylos fashion designer, George Machado is an equally fine photographer. In this elegant book he shares his understanding of the male physique, the moody mystery behind the maleness of his subjects, and in doing so not only demonstrates his understanding of the matrix upon which he built his reputation as a fashion designer, but also proves that he has an artist's eye for composition and q genuinely fine appreciation of the effects of light and dark on his subjects.

In an Introduction by Frank Browning the unique aspects of the 'Male' qualities are explored and serve as a fine resource for viewing the full-page photographs that follow. Machado's naturally muscular models are photographed both in nature - a location that demands an understanding of how light and accompanying shadow sculpt the photographic image - and in the studio where he can isolate the male nude for refined focus and sensitive posing. Machado's images in this volume are of both the full figure of the model as well as close-ups of eyes, feet, and faces. He uses both black and white images as well as sepia toned images and is equally successful in both areas.

Though Machado's subjects are all nude males, the images he presents are not those of false erotic intention: he instead lets the models at rest transmit their innate sexuality in their engagement with the viewer's eye. MASCULINE is a sophisticated monograph that seems more interested in defining the title with subtlety rather than staged bravado. Grady Harp, June 09
