After "MASH" & "MASH Goes to Maine," Richard Hooker "took on a collaborator", William E. Butterworth, for a series of "MASH Goes to..." books.

The first two MASH books are basically collections of short stories with a very loose structure. The Butterworth books are sitcom novels... and not very good ones.

After the Butterworth series was played out, Hooker released "MASH Mania," which was a loosely structured series of short stories about the Swampmen in middle-age -- a rock-ribbed Republican middle-age, in fact, amazing though that may be to fans of the TV series, which Hooker hated. Although this book has politics opposite to my own, it's still funny and more importantly, Hooker WROTE IT.

From the completely different writing styles involved, I'd say that if Hooker ever even SAW what Butterworth wrote, it was to say, "Yeah, ok. I'll approve that."

I like Hooker's writing; so I felt rather manipulated by the Butterworth MASH books, which to my mind are Hooker's in name only.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's out of print for a reason, February 23, 2006

Awful book. Read half of it, won't bother to finish.

The focus on the book is on a host of idiotic characters, some intended to parody well-known figures, rather than on M*A*S*H characters (which is to their benefit). There's also no real relation to the TV show (also to its benefit). The plot is absurd, the writing style irritating when it's not failing at being cute or clever.

There is nothing to recommend this book. Hooker should be ashamed that he put his name to this, and Butterworth glad that his work as W.E.B. Griffin puts this dreck in the background.

If I could give zero stars, I would.

1.0 out of 5 stars SORT OF PITIFUL, February 21, 2006
There is really not all that much to say about this obvious ploy to cash in on the cash cow that was M.A.S.H. I did read the work "M.A.S.H. Goes to Maine." and found parts of it to be amusing and even funny. This work reviewed here simply does not have it. I am not at all sure who wrote the thing, but am sure that the publisher should have put a stop to it before it saw light of day. If you should find this one is a local used book store, don't waste your money.
