5.0 out of 5 stars It Must Be Said, March 14, 2005
This review is from: The Mask: Original Motion Picture Score (Audio CD)
This CD is great. I beyond love the score to this movie just as much as I love the movie itself. In short, Randy Edelman does it again. Too bad he's such an underated film composer. In my book he's right up there with Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, Alan Menken, Hans Zimmer, and James Horner.
His score compliments all the actions in the movie so well regardless of whether the scene is funny, suspenseful, romantic, or mystical. And underneath it all, most of that tracks still hold that small hint of zaniness to match the overall theme. My personal favorite track is "Tina." Of all the ways I've seen her, nothing causes me to see Camerin Diaz in a more beautiful light than that piece.

P.S. In response to the viewer who accused Randy Edelman of being a "copy cat": 1) All those movies, save for Memoirs of an Invisible Man, were ALSO COMPOSED BY RANDY EDELMAN! So, there's a good chance it's just his style you recognize. You can even just say that he has trouble coming up with new material just so long as you get your facts straight. 2) Dragonheart didn't even come out before The Mask. Dragonheart came out in 1996. The Mask came out in 1994. So unless Mr. Edelman for some reason composed the score for Dragonheart first, or owns a time machine, I'm pretty sure that he didn't reiterate anything from the Dragonheart score. If anything, it was the other way around. Just wanted to throw those out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wish, March 8, 2002

I live in a country where there are few opportunities to get the rare items. In the distant year of 1994, I remember seeing this movie and loving it, but most of all I loved its score. And I thought they would never release a cd with it. When, almost 10 years later, I got to hear the music from the picture, a part of me was complete. A great work by Randy Edelman, which deserves to have its own track on the DVD. Fantastic all the way, a five star review to this record! Hear it, it's unmissable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally dull, December 9, 2002

And that's the only exception to this soundtrack. I bought it in 1998 and I swear I've listened to it only twice. It really is that boring. The only kind of music we get is that to match the hijinks on-screen. Randy Edelman just doesn't bring his own unique angle to the picture at all. Some of the lighthearted music is good enough to stand on its own but it's hardly worth buying the CD for and it doesn't make for a worthy score.

What's totally weird is that much of it sounds exactly like his score for 'Dragonheart', a score that was infinitely superior to this novice entry. Most of the cues are so basic and without any kind of clout. The bad guy theme is so obvious without being menacing, the love theme is too sugary and feels tacky and false and the rest is just filler.

A couple of comic tracks have some wacky takes on certain themes but there is still no reason to buy this CD. I bought it in hope that the crazy music played during the scene where Ipkiss puts on the mask for the first time was included. Now that was cool. But it's not on the CD. Nothing of interest is. Buy Dragonheart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack if you want a decent (or great) Edelman score.
