Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Beginning as a thriller, this new novel by the author of The Original Sin eventually descends into schlocky romance. Kate Kelly, a 40-ish beauty who runs a hotel in Vail, Colo., has become obsessed with the search for her father, an American soldier supposedly shot dead in 1959 after 14 years in Soviet prisons and labor camps. When a vicious attack leaves Kate comatose, her daughter, investigative reporter Anna, comes to Colorado. Her plane is met by mysterious, handsome and wildly wealthy Philip Westward, who met Kate in the course of his own quest for a vanished father, also imprisoned behind the Iron Curtain at the close of WW II. Anna finds the source of her mother's obsession--her grandmother's wartime diary revealing Kate's father's identity--and is herself brutally attacked. She and Philip set out to solve the mystery, but may pay for their knowledge with their lives. Gabriel creates some telling characterizations of minor players (such as the assassin Truck) and a few affecting scenes--most notably the diary flashbacks, which combine a sweet depiction of first love with realistic evocations of fascist Italy's horror--but the romance between Anna and Philip degenerates at the end into melodrama and such saccharine sentiments as "How much she loved him! How he had suffered!"

From Kirkus Reviews

A satisfying Nazi/Cold War potboiler by the author of The Original Sin (1992) that turns on the heat at the start and doesn't let up until the kettle shrieks 592 pages later. World War II has just ended. A beautiful peasant girl in Italy dies giving birth to an illegitimate daughter, Catarina, while a man named Joseph tries to convince the Russians in charge of a Displaced Persons camp in Latvia that he is an American and should be sent home. Meanwhile, David, a seductive but penniless Englishman home from the war, reels in Evelyn, a woman with the money and connections he's been waiting for. Then we're back to the future in 1992. A glamorous Vail resort director named Kate (the grown-up Catarina, as it turns out) is engrossed in researching an American POW who disappeared into the Soviet gulag after the war- -while a shadowy figure sets a sadistic killer on Kate's trail. The killer catches up to her, ransacking her house and leaving her in a coma. Kate's daughter Anna, an investigative reporter, arrives to coax her mother back to consciousness, and stays to find out who her mother was looking for and who tried to have her killed. It all leads back to Joseph and David, as the story continues to unfold in both the past (with engrossing descriptions of wartime and postwar hardship and romance) and the present (with lots of formulaic romance and heavy-handed villainy). Anna switches with dizzying speed from intrigue to interior decorating as she puzzles out her mother's mystery with the help of Philip Westward, a suave millionaire she doesn't quite trust but falls madly in love with. It's all a bit much at times, as Anna remarks to her still- unconscious mother: ``Life's a bitch. You in here, Evelyn dying all alone in England. And I'm in love with the most wonderful man I've ever known. And I'm so happy, so sad, so confused.'' But she rallies and, with Philip's help, manages to survive an over-the-top encounter with an aging Nazi and solve her mother's mystery--and Philip's--both of which have to do with false identities and missing fathers. Despite the usual genre cliches and an occasional jarring note of sexism, this is a well-paced and engaging read. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read, January 24, 2000
I was recommended THE SEVENTH MOON by this author and enjoyed it so much I came back for another book. MASK OF TIME is just as good. I could not believe my luck. This is another wonderfully engrossing story, with a huge sweep of history and an evolving mystery that goes back two generations. It is a rivetting story, and I cannot recommend it too highly. I am now going to work my way right through Gabriel's books!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've ever read., June 8, 2003
When I commenced reading The Mask of Time I was tempted to put it down. That would have been my loss, it was a book that has remained firmly entrenched in my mind, since it was published. I recommended the book to everyone I knew who was a reader. It surpassed the expectations of everyone I knew. It has a wonderful plot. This book kept me up for 3days and nights,I took it to lunch, the beach, everywhere I went until I finished it. I was sorry when I had finished it. The end of the tale was a little weak, but despite that, this is one book that should have been a blockbuster. An absolutely wonderful tale. His more recent books have been enjoyable, but he will find it difficult to write a book that will surpass The Mask of Time. When I become a very old person I will always remember this book and I've read a lot of books!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting, July 20, 2000

What more can you ask for, the interwoven stories of WWII, Nazi's, and past and present love affairs. I found it difficult to put this book down and was unprepared for the ending. This is definitely a book to read again at some time in the future. After I finished it, I spent an hour rereading parts that had suddenly become crystal clear. Mr. Gabriel certainly knows his craft well. Before I started this one, I had read "The Seventh Moon" and was worried I would be disappointed that Mask couldn't possibly be as good, I was wrong. Looking forward to his future work.
