5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning debut, December 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Mason Jennings (Audio CD)
This debut album from Mason Jennings is a stunning introduction to this very promising songwriter. Heartfelt, poignant and utterly original, Mason Jennings displays a potential of equal depth and emotion to that of Neil Young, Bob Dylan or Elliott Smith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing album, June 16, 2002

This album blew me away, and I'm not easily blown away. I've read other reviews that put Jack Johnson in the same sentance with Mason, why? Mason is miles better than Johnson. This album is one of the greatest, but hidden, albums of the 90's. He sings like Dylan, has the soul of David Gray, plays like Neil Young and combine all this with his own style of play and you have quite possibly the greatest singer/songwriter since the era of Young and Dylan. I am not exaggerating, he is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally on Amazon!, January 4, 2002

It's about time Mason Jennings is on Amazon.com. An unblievably talented singer-songwriter deserves as many fans as he has and a whole lot more. Not buying this album would be cheating yourself out of some of the most honest, heartfelt folk rock ever written. Everyone needs this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not close to Neil Young, let alone Dylan., February 24, 2003

This album is an amazing first effort--very fresh and very listenable. As some have said, Jennings can write a hook. He is very distinct and manages to write a few beautiful songs. That said, he doesn't even approach the power of Dylan's lyricism or Neil Young's introspection. In fact, some of Jennings lyrics are nothing more than sophomoric attempts at profundity (e.g. 1997), which Dylan attained to with ease and prolificly. There is no real comparison between Dylan and Jennings. And Neil Young has seen too much in his life to be surpassed in depth or beauty by this up-and-comer. That fact is evident upon listening to the cannons of both artists. What Jennings is, though, is a fine songwriter who has crafted at least a couple of very pretty songs. And he's a lot better than most of his contemporaries.
