Book Description

January 1999 089314536X 978-0893145361
This work is of equal interest to Freemasons and students of the development of secret societies in Western Europe since the Roman Conquest. The principle emphasis is upon the seventeenth and eighteenth century revivals of the Mystery Rituals of antiquity. Such famous names as the Comte de St. Germain, Cagliostro, and Louis Claude de St. Martin share with old Dr. John Dee and the French philosopher/writer, Voltaire. There is information about the mysterious rituals of Memphis and the Illuminati, which flourished briefly in Bavaria, as well as the revival of Egyptian Masonry, which inspired Mozart's opera of "The Magic Flute." All these conspiracies and counter-conspiracies are as intriguing as a detective story, and much valuable history is concealed in the records of these esoteric schools. Illustrated.

From the Publisher

The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern.

About the Author

Manly P. Hall was the founder of the Philosophical Research Society. In over seventy-five years of dynamic public activity, he delivered more than 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, and authored countless books, essays, and articles. In his lectures and writings, Manly Hall always emphasized the practical aspects of philosophy and religion as they applied to daily living. He restated for modern man those spiritual and ethical doctrines which have given humanity its noblest ideals and most adequate codes of conduct. Believing that philosophy is a working tool to help the individual in building a solid foundation for his dreams and purposes, Manly Hall steadfastly sought recognition of the belief that world civilization can be perfected only when human beings meet on a common ground of intelligence, cooperation, and worthy purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You Manly Hall, September 26, 2000
This review is from: Masonic Orders of Fraternity (Adept Series) (Pt. 4) (Paperback)
This book talks about a very important man by the name of Hiram Abiff. Hiram was a master Mason. This book tells a lot about freemasons and how the organization got started. In my own words this book holds much power and I say this because a Mason knows what he should and should not say, do or write. But to someone who doesn't know anything about the craft this is just a book to them. To a Mason this is a handbook. I myself am looking to become a freemason one-day and this is the best book I could have ever laid my eyes on. I would like to thank the author for taking me so far into the craft with the knowledge that he has. In this book the author lays everything out and tells you about everyone that he is talking about in the book.

The only thing I did not like about the book is that he did not tell a lot about the symbolic seals in the book but I can understand why. Thank you Manly Hall, this book gets 5 stars from me.
