Basic book for anyone who wants to do masonry work themselves. The pictures and descriptions are clear and helpful. Would be nice to include some common mistakes and obstacles in real life.

3.0 out of 5 stars For weekend warriors only, March 2, 2010

This review is from: Masonry: Design, Build, Maintain (Paperback)
TLDR: Good pictures, some info, missing real life tips, and problems that you will encounter. Very, Very OVERSIMPLIFIED. Real life will come knocking when you try to do these.

I hate this book.

However, before writing a review I had to be fair and read it again (it's been sitting on a shelf collecting dust).

It's not as horrible as I remember it, the problem is I thought it was intended for a Construction Worker, when it is intended for a 40 year old man / woman who wants to try the DIY craze.

I blame HGTV. Vague magic wand wave and it's done anyone? Holmes on Homes should be investigating the all the projects done in the other time slots, haha.

Most of their shows feature 15 workers are off camera sweating while they have some white guy and chick who lives in the gym pretending to do the work.

I like seeing the sweaty workers in the background.

Not that I'm bashing DIY, but give them some real information to work with.

The worst section in this book is the TILE section, it's so vague and short as to be basically worthless. I'll link a decent tile book to this post.Tiling: Planning, Layout & Installation (For Pros By Pros)

The other sections are OK. They are vague and short, but have great pictures and ok information.

If they split the book up into 4-5 books and added info it would be much more useful.

I know you wish 1 book could tell you all (it would save some $$$) but it would have to be very, very large.
